Program in Liberal Arts and Sciences

University College Tilburg offers a Liberal Arts and Sciences program which combines different scientific disciplines to understand complex global issues and to look for creative solutions. This small-scale and intensive program will intellectually challenge you and teach you to find creative solutions and sharpen your critical thinking. Throughout the program, you will have plenty of personal guidance from both your academic advisor and the professors who will provide you with feedback on your course work.

University College Tilburg: a joint initiative

Our four leading Schools are jointly committed to the Liberal Arts and Sciences program. This means you will be team-taught by well-established and highly experienced professors from different Schools and by experts from different academic backgrounds and research traditions. These professors and experts come from Tilburg School of Economics and Management, Tilburg Law School, Tilburg School of Humanities, and Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Europe in a globalizing world

European history and culture are the main elements in the curriculum, which means that both historical and current European key issues are tackled. Most of the courses are approached from a European perspective with a focus on the humanities and the social sciences. The humanities comprise culture, history, literature, philosophy, and religion. The social sciences comprise sociology, psychology, law, and business and management.

The structure of our program

Your academic advisor will guide you through all your course choices, helping you to develop your own degree program. In your first year, you will follow compulsory courses on a wide variety of subjects, such as Modernity, Identity and Evil; War; Law; and Film and Consumerism. These courses are designed to give you an overview of the different academic disciplines offered within the Liberal Arts and Sciences program. They also lay the groundwork for the development of strong academic skills.

In your second year of study, you will choose to specialize in one of five majors:

  • Business and Management
  • Law in Europe
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities: European History and Culture
  • Cognitive Neuroscience

Your major involves in-depth study within one academic discipline. In addition to your major, you will also choose a minor. Your minor can be in a field different to that of your major, giving you the opportunity to broaden your expertise. However, you can also choose to pursue your minor in the same field as your major to further deepen your knowledge in that specific area. You can pursue your minor courses at Tilburg University, at another research university in the Netherlands, or abroad during an exchange semester.

As every major offers you both electives and mandatory courses, you will follow a coherent curriculum that will prepare you for a top Master's program.
