Minors at Tilburg School of Economics and Management

This website informs you about the minors at Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). A minor is a set of three courses in a certain field. Each minor consists of two courses of 6 ECTS and one course of 3 ECTS and you choose one TiSEM minor in block 1 and one minor on challenges in business and society in block 2. A minor can deepen or broaden your knowledge and understanding.

If you are enrolled in the bachelor Bedrijfskunde, Economie en Bedrijfseconomie, Economics, Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation, or International Business Administration you can choose:

  • A TiSEM minor (15 ECTS) in block 1 and a Challenges in Business and Society minor (15 ECTS) in block 2. 
  • Do a minor at another School within Tilburg University. For information about Tilburg University minors (including eligibility, approval, and application), please visit this website. If a minor at another School is 18 or 24 ECTS you will need to follow a 15 ECTS minor in block 1 or 2 at TiSEM. You will exceed the required 30 ECTS. These extra credits will appear on your grade list as on top off courses. Please note that students in the bachelor Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation can also do a minor at another university. 

Minors

Each minor at TiSEM is 15 ECTS and consists of three courses. Two courses of 6 ECTS and one course of 3 ECTS. Each course in a minor has a mix of lectures, tutorials, and self-study. Courses are assessed by an exam and/ or (team) assignment. You choose a minor in block one and one minor in block two. If you choose a minor, you automatically follow the three courses in the respective minor, meaning that it is not possible to choose three courses from three different minors.

Registration

You need to register for a minor in block one and a minor in block 2. Registration for the minor in block one is possible between August 13 (as of 16.00) and August 20 (deadline 16.00). Registration for the minor in block 2 is possible between October 8 (as of 16.00) and October 15 (deadline 16.00). Registration is mandatory and consists of two steps:

  1. Enroll for your minor. See this video. The minor will be added to your personal study program in OSIRIS.
  2. Enroll for each course in your minor separately as well to get access to the canvas page (as soon as the course coordinator publishes it).

TiSEM minors - block 1

In block 1 you choose one TiSEM minor. Below you can read the topic of the minor and the courses within the minor.

Minor Accountancy

The minor Accountancy further develops your knowledge and skills to collect and analyze financial and non-financial information which is key for decision making in business. Whether you have to book a lease contract in your accounts, to negotiate with a client about prices, to invest in a new project or to decide on key performance indicators for your team, relevant and reliable information is indispensable. The course Internal Control and Risk Management focuses on the importance of information flows in different types of companies with special attention to the risks that the lack of controls in systems might create. The course Corporate Financial Reporting focuses on the use of this information to create financial statements in line with the International Financial Reporting Standards. Understanding the accounting standards is crucial to create correct financial statement but also to be able to analyze these financial statements to gain insights in companies. The course Cost and Performance Management focuses on the use of cost information to analyze the business and make complex decisions. Understanding costs and targets also allows you to discuss performance measures at different levels in a company. The minor consists of the following courses:

Minor Economics

The focus of this minor is on economic policy making. The course History of Economic Thought teaches how ideas on economic theory and  policies have developed over time, and how they were shaped by important historical developments. The course Economics of the European Union focuses on (macro) policy making in Europe, applied to different policy areas. In the course Economics in Practice you learn how to use micro economics to advise firms on how to deal with changes in their environment due to changes in (European) legislation. The minor consists of the following courses:

Minor Entrepreneurship & Strategy

The importance of entrepreneurship and an entrepreneurial midset for innovation and positive societal change is a consistent theme in this minor. The course Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice focusses on how innovation and change are driven by entrepreneurial new ventures and the novel products and services that they create. The course Introduction to Corporate Entrepreneurship explores innovation and renewal within existing businesses. This is often seen as a challenge, especially in the context of trying to combine existing business performance with the development of new sources of revenue, or more sustainable business models. The course Entrepreneurship for sustainable impact connects both the start-up and incumbent worlds, as a source of opportunities and a driver of change. The core concepts of this minor are Value Creation, Delivery, and Value Capture. The minor provides a variety of coherent insights into these core concepts in different but also overlapping contexts. How organizations, individuals, governments and institutions search for, create and deliver solutions, is connected to how entrepreneurship  as a process does that and why. This minor provides you with new insights into business and societal challenges and how they, from an entrepreneurial mindset perspective, might play a role in overcoming them in your future career. The minor consists of the following courses:

Minor Essential Digital Skills

Essential Digital Skills are crucial if you would like to pursue a career in business and management because it enables you to thrive in today's increasingly digital-centric workplace. Proficiency in digital skills empowers you to navigate a data-driven business landscape, streamline operations, make informed decisions, and adapt to rapidly evolving technology.   • Essential Mathematics for Data Science (6 ECTS)

Minor Finance

In this minor you learn about new academic perspectives across two key domains. First. understanding the origin and functioning of financial institutions, and second the principles of financial decision-making. In relation to financial institutions, we offer the course, Financial History and Intermediation, in which you will comprehend the historical and institutional roots of financial intermediations and the genesis and evolution of money, banks, and corporations. In relation to financial decision-making, two courses are offered: Financial Management and Risk Management. In the course Financial Management, you learn how financial managers of different types of firms make socially responsible but at the same time economically viable decisions. In the course Risk Management, you learn how managers diagnose and manage their risks by using several financial strategies and contracts (financial derivatives). Overall, in the minor Finance you will acquire new intellectual lenses, empowering them to better understand contemporary debates in the finance discipline. The minor consists of the following courses:

Minor Information & Supply Chain Management

In this minor you learn how major information and technology-related developments affect businesses. The course Decision Support Systems focuses on individual decision-making and introduces you to business analytics, performance dashboards, database management, predictive analytics, and knowledge-based Decision Support Systems. The course Supply Chain Management focuses on intra- and inter-organizational business processes and addresses the role of Information Systems in organizations and in supply chains. In the course Project “ISCM” you apply your knowledge and understanding at the intersection of information systems and supply chain management. The minor consists of the following courses:

Minor Marketing

Understanding customer behavior to develop strategies to build relationships with (potential) customers is the goal of this minor. The course Digital and Social Media Strategies focusses on strategies to connect consumers in a digital environment. The course Managing Services: Expectations and Perceptions focusses on strategies to increase customer loyalty in a service environment. Both courses integrate 1) managerially and strategically relevant consumer theories with 2) empirical evidence and data driven techniques that support managerial decision making. The course Big Data Marketing Analytics: Concepts and Cases takes a more analytical approach and learn you how analytical models can help to understand and predict consumer behavior. The minor consists of the following courses:

Quantitative minor

The Quantitative minor is attractive for TiSEM students who opt for the master Business Analytics and Operations Research, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, or Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science or for students who want to increase their quantitative skills. The courses in the minor are taught by the faculty from the department Econometrics and Operations Research. Do not underestimate this minor. An average of at least 7.5 on your mathematics and statistics courses is highly recommended.

The course The Economics of Arts intertwines the principles of economics with art valuation and historical perspectives whereas the course Creative Pulse: Law, Labour, and Digital delve into the confluence of legal, labor, and digital facets within the creative and cultural industries. Minor Health Policy

The aim of this minor is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare landscape. The course Challenges for Healthcare Systems focusses on health systems and regulations and equips you with the knowledge how healthcare systems are structured and governed. The course ‘How Healthy Should People Be’ delves into the Grossman Model of Health and provides you with economic insights into individual health decisions. This knowledge is useful for the course How to Determine Causes of Health in which you execute in a team your own health research projects. In this course you can apply your knowledge of health systems, regulations, and economic models to a real-world setting which increases your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Minor Operations Management for Sustainable Development

This minor imparts essential skills and techniques in operations management, emphasizing their practical application to real-world challenges associated with sustainable development. Through real-life examples, you learn the use of operations management and operations research tools (e.g., inventory management, resource allocation, linear optimization) in reaching sustainable development goals (e.g., zero hunger, no poverty, sustainable production and consumption, good health and well-being). The course OM foundations for Sustainable Development provides you with an understanding of a commercial supply chain and discusses the differences between developed and developing contexts, as well as the perspectives of different stakeholders (e.g., policymakers, consumers, businesses). In the course OM complexities for Sustainable Development, you learn about challenges in managing supply chains with a humanitarian goal. You will learn tools applicable in complex real-life situations related to access to water, food, and medicine in developing countries. Minor Sustainable Taxes for Business and Society

Sustainable Taxes for Business and Society are essential for citizens and firms for the financing of public goods and for stimulating citizens and firms towards wellbeing and broad prosperity now and in the future. The course Green Taxation focuses on environmental sustainability challenges like climate change, biodiversity, and the depletion of natural resources. It discusses the role of governmental policies in general towards these challenges and corrective tax policies such as carbon and energy policies and tax policies aimed at reducing waste, and water use. The study of worldwide tax systems is the focal point in the course Sustainable Tax Systems. It analyses the optimal mix of consumption, labour income, capital income, and profit taxes. It also provides students a strength and weakness analysis of various tax systems and stipulates how tax systems can be made robust against trends like aging, globalization, and increasing wealth inequalities. The course International Tax Governance focusses on the global governance of sustainable tax systems. It discusses tax competition between and cooperation among countries and the supervising role of international organizations like the OECD and the United Nations.   • Can I enroll for two minors in block 1?
    No, you can only enroll for one minor in block 1. You need to register for the minor in block 1 between August 13 (as of 16.00) and August 20(deadline 16.00).
  • Can I enroll for 2 minors in block 2?
    No, you can only enroll for one minor in block 2. You need to register for the minor in block 2 between October 8 (as of 16.00) and October 15 (deadline 16.00).
  • What happens if I fail the exam and the resit of a course in the minor?
    If you fail a course in a minor, you will need to take the course again in the next academic year to complete the minor or take a whole new minor from the same block in the next academic year.
  • What happens if I fail a non-TiSEM minor?
    If you fail a non-TiSEM minor, you can either finish the minor in the next academic year or take the TiSEM minor in block 1 or the Challenges in Business and Society minor in block 2 of the next academic year.
  • I enrolled in a minor in 2023-2024 or before but have not completed it. Can I finish it?
    If the course from your minor that you need still exists in 2024-2025 you can. Just enroll for the course. If the course no longer exists, there will be a transition rule. See: https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/students/studying/regulations/eer/economics-management
  • I am from another TiU School. Can I do one of the minors at TiSEM?
    The list of minors that is available for your program is in OSIRIS. Check the video above (under the heading Registration on this web page) to see how to enroll for a minor. After clicking ENROL and MINOR, the list of available minors will pop up.
  • I am from another University. Can I do one of the minors at TiSEM? 
    Yes, if you meet the entry requirements. Please note that you may need permission from your own program / School. To take a minor, please enroll as an individual contract student and follow the procedures on the website. 
  • I am from an HBO institution. Can I do one of the minors at TiSEM?
    It is not possible to do a minor at TiSEM if you follow a HBO bachelor.
  • What happens if I did not register for a minor in block 1 or 2 before the deadline?
    Registration for the minors in block 1 and 2 is mandatory. Register on time.
