English Master's Prep Course

During this English Master’s Prep Course, you will be prepared for productive academic use of English (writing and speaking) at the C1 level that is recommended for a Master’s program.

The writing components of the course focus on writing in an academic setting. This includes using academic register and style, clearly structuring your text and properly incorporating and referencing source material. Since critical reflection and communicating with nuance are important both in speaking and writing, the course also covers critical reading, analyzing source material and providing feedback.

You will improve your speaking skills by means of discussions and other speaking assignments and you will be trained to avoid common pronunciation mistakes in English. There are activities in active listening and notetaking in order to obtain relevant information, and you are also taught to communicate in a culturally diverse context.

Target audience

The course is aimed at students currently enrolled in a Dutch-taught Bachelor’s program who wish to prepare for an English-taught Master’s program. However, the course is also open to students in an English-taught Bachelor’s who do not feel they are at a Master’s level of English yet.

On completion of the course, you will be able to

  1. critically read and reflect on source information;
  2. properly incorporate and reference sources;
  3. write an academic position paper in your own field;
  4. produce spoken and written English at C1 level in terms of grammar and vocabulary;
  5. speak intelligibly and with relatively high fluency both online and in live settings;
  6. make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register, also taking into account differences in cultural background.
