English for Communicative Purposes

The aim of this course is for you to improve your ability to communicate in English for work and study either in the Netherlands or abroad. The course has a strong focus on speaking and writing.

The course provides you with the opportunity to practice the productive (writing and speaking) skills required for successful communication in the academic and professional realms. With respect to writing, attention is paid to essay writing, the composition of project and business proposals and (email) correspondence. As for the speaking part of the course, you will deliver an (online) presentation and practice with online deliberation. Besides input on and practice with the activities mentioned above, functional language (grammar and vocabulary) which is directly relevant to these activities will be introduced. During the course, you complete an extended (productive) skills project in which you work on improving one or more skills of your choice.
This course is taught partly online and partly on campus. Before signing up, please check whether you will generally be able to come to campus at the scheduled time. For students who are physically unable to come to campus, an online alternative assignment will be provided.

Target audience

This course is recommended when you are quite confident about your reading and listening skills, but less about your writing and speaking skills. This course is especially recommended when you are in your first and/or second year of studying and do not necessarily want to improve your general level of English, but focus more on using your language in a number of practical contexts.

At the end of the course you can

  • clearly express and support your opinions both in written and spoken English
  • apply the formal conventions in terms of structure of email correspondence, essays and business proposals
  • apply a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures accurately at the B2+ level, as well as use spelling and punctuation correctly
  • describe and analyze a topic in a presentation taking into account audience, style and register, and key pronunciation issues that hinder communication, and present your opinions in an engaging manner.
