The Art of Presenting

In The Art of Presenting, you are provided with the opportunity to build on existing speaking skills to become a more effective presenter. You will be able to deliver engaging and convincing presentations in an academic or professional setting, both live and online. You will be able to do so with confidence and in fluent English, using a variety of presentation techniques, language, and non-verbal tools.

During the course, you learn to adapt your style, language, delivery method and content of the presentation to the situation and your audience. Language and communication strategies, theater techniques, and creativity play a central role in this endeavor. The lessons are interactive with ample feedback from both the instructor and peers, but also include self- and peer assessment. Some vocabulary useful for presenting and common grammar mistakes made while presenting are also part of the course.

Please note that this course is taught on campus with the exception of one lesson on online presenting.

Target audience

This course is recommended for bachelor’s students as well as (pre-)master’s students whose general English skills are acceptable to good (CEFR-level estimated at B2+ or higher), but who want to specifically cultivate and/or improve their presentation/public speaking skills.

At the end of the course, you will be able to

  • construct a presentation structure that is appropriate given the purpose of the presentation and indicate this structure clearly while delivering your presentation;
  • employ vocal techniques that reflect the content of your presentation and engage the listener;
  • present with confidence using appropriate body language, posture and gestures;
  • use a register and vocabulary that are appropriate for the purpose and audience of the presentation, including using rhetorical techniques for effect;
  • analyze your own presentation in terms of presentation techniques and effectiveness;
  • analyze others’ presentation skills in terms of structure, presentation techniques and effectiveness and provide constructive feedback;
  • create and incorporate visual support for your presentation (including physical objects);
  • make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register.
