Speaking English with Confidence
In Speaking English with Confidence you will learn to communicate confidently and clearly in English. This advanced-level course (B2+ or C1 of the CEFR) focuses on improving your fluency and pronunciation skills. You will develop the ability to express yourself clearly on a diverse range of topics and acquire strategies to allow you to communicate fluently, especially in spontaneous situations.
Moreover, you will master the characteristic sounds of the English language for clear and understandable speech, and you will learn to correctly use word and sentence stress. Finally, you will explore how you can use sentence stress and intonation to add depth to your spoken English.
Target audience
This course is recommended for students who want to improve their general spoken English language skills with the aim of communicating with other English-speakers confidently and clearly. After completing this course, you could consider further specialization with the course The Art of Presenting or Professional English.
At the end of the course you can
- speak at length in English without noticeable effort or loss of coherence;
- express yourself clearly on a wide range of topics without having to restrict what you want to say;
- use chunking, discourse markers, and circumlocution for increasing fluency;
- produce sounds that are characteristic to the English language intelligibly;
- employ correct word and sentence stress in English;
- manipulate sentence stress and intonation for effect;
- make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register.
Specifics
- Taught fully on campus
- 80% attendance is required. Lessons are not recorded for later viewing.
- The language of instruction in the course is English.
- Language learning takes time! In this course, you are expected to spend 6 hours a week on independent study.
- The Language Center reserves the right to cancel the course should enrollment numbers prove to be insufficient.

This course is intended for everyone who is highly educated. This means that you have a diploma at HAVO or VWO level and are therefore eligible for Higher Education in the Netherlands.
