English for Staff: Refresher Course

The Language Center is offering the English Refresher Course for Tilburg University employees who wish to brush-up on their English skills. The course focuses mainly on speaking and writing, but also covers issues of grammar and vocabulary.

The Refresher Course focuses on helping you improve your English for both work-related and general communication purposes. The goal of the course is to help you feel more confident about your English language skills. While all four language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) will be practiced, homework and in-class activities will focus on sharpening the two productive skills – speaking and writing.

Aspects that will be covered throughout the course include a review of key English grammar points, expansion of vocabulary and knowledge of useful phrases and expressions, English writing for business purposes, and presenting and discussing a variety of subjects in English. You should expect to spend between 2-4 hours on homework each week.

In-class activities and homework assignments can be customized by the participants to address their specific needs.

Upon completion of the course, you can receive  a microcredential.

Target group

Tilburg University staff members who received an assessment score of about B1+ to B2+ and who wish to brush up on their English knowledge.

At the end of the course you can

  • speak more confidently in English;
  • write better and more accurate texts in a work context;
  • apply grammar rules at a high B2 level or higher;
  • independently expand your vocabulary;
  • make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register.

Your current level of English was assessed during the English Language Assessment, which you can find in your employee portal. If you are unsure of your level or whether this course is suitable for you, you can also contact the coordinator for the English department [LM1] to schedule a quick interview.
