four students in classroom

Expert English (C2 Level)

This course aims to support you in attaining a near-native level of overall proficiency in English, i.e. in speaking, writing, reading and listening. You will learn to use the grammar and vocabulary typical of an expert user of English at C2 level.

In this course, you will dedicate yourself to detailed and in-depth study of language and skills at C2 level, with a special focus on selected areas of advanced grammar, vocabulary, and idiom. Attention is paid to improving those skills needed to function at a high level in an English-taught graduate program or English-speaking professional environment. This means you will develop all four skills (listening, speaking, reading & writing) towards the C2 level. You will learn to comprehend longer written and spoken texts from a range of genres and produced in a range of English varieties and accents. You will also learn to produce fluent speech in presentation, discussion and conversation. With respect to writing, attention is paid to learning to write texts which are highly organized and with consideration for detail and style.

Target audience

This course is recommended if you are an ambitious student who already possesses a high level of English (solid or high C1) and wish to attain a level close to that of the native speaker. If you wish to function with ease in an English language professional environment or undertake graduate study in English, this course will prepare you towards these ends.

At the end of the course you will be able to

  1. interpret and connect ideas in more complex texts on topics within and outside your field of interest;
  2. comprehend extended speech at C2 level with one or more speakers in a range of social, professional and academic settings with little difficulty, even when this speech is less organized, delivered at fast native speed or in a less familiar variety of English;
  3. express yourself fluently, clearly and appropriately in a range of social and academic or professional situations with the ability to formulate ideas and opinions on both familiar and unfamiliar topics with considerable detail, precision and flexibility;
  4. compose structured written texts in which clear, detailed descriptions of more complex subjects are presented and register and style have been selected appropriately;
  5. use a wide range of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, and a variety of complex grammatical forms flexibly, appropriately and accurately in written and spoken discourse to the degree that can be expected of a writer and speaker of English at C2 level;
  6. autonomously expand your vocabulary and improve your overall proficiency in English with the emphasis on gaining the knowledge and ability required of C2 speakers and writers of English;
  7. make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register.
