Italian for beginners 1

In this course, you will learn the basics of Italian. All skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) are covered, but the course focuses mainly on oral communication. You will soon be able to have short conversations in Italian.

 All practice activities focus on practical and realistic situations, such as introducing yourself, exchanging personal information, describing your city or neighborhood, and shopping. During the course, you will complete various individual and group assignments so that you can immediately put into practice what you have learned.

Cultural topics are also covered during the lessons.

By the end of the course, you will have reached level A1+ of the European Reference Framework. You will then be able to:

  • give and receive personal information, such as: age, date and place of birth, nationality, profession, academic studies, work experience, place of residence, marital status, family and personal relationships, habits, and hobbies; 
  • describe someone (clothing, character, physical attributes, etc.);
  • use polite phrases to greet people, apologize, and ask for attention; 
  • understand and tell vacation stories;  
  • go grocery shopping, go shopping, order in a bar/restaurant;  
  • give information and ask about hobbies; 
  • understand and give basic information about places such as countries, cities, and your own home;
  • understand the differences and similarities between your own culture and that of Italy and make them comprehensible to others to facilitate communication;
  • advance to the course Italian for beginners 2.

Specifics

  • This course is taught on campus.
  • 80% attendance is required. Lessons are not recorded for later viewing.
  • The language of instruction in the course is Italian (and if necessary English/Dutch).
  • Language learning takes time! In this course, you are expected to spend 8 hours a week on independent study.
  • The Language Center reserves the right to cancel the course should enrollment numbers prove to be insufficient.
