Academic Writing in English for (PhD) Researchers

The purpose of the course is to provide you with the writing skills to improve your ability to communicate ideas and findings in written English within the prescribed forms of academic and professional writing.

The lesson format is a combination of interactive seminars and individual coaching sessions. The seminars cover conventions of academic English as well as the writing skills and strategies necessary to create clear logical flow.

During the course, you work on a text you would like to complete in the near future, e.g., an article, summary, proposal, or a section of a book or dissertation, so you have to be in the process of writing already.

The course is tailor-made to the needs of the participants. To this end, we use each other’s current texts-in-progress to identify individual strengths and weaknesses. This information is used for planning plenary sessions and to provide individual coaching and feedback.

Target group

Because this course has a major workshop component, it is meant for (PhD) researchers who are currently in the writing process of one or more publications. This course is not recommended for researchers who are primarily conducting research and are not in the process of writing. If the participant does not have a current text that they are writing, they are recommended to take the course at a later stage.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Compose properly structured academic articles and long-form texts (article-based dissertation or monograph) for publication and/or submission for a Ph.D.;
  2. Recognize and remedy problems in your own articles and long-form texts with respect to paragraph writing, coherence and unity, advanced grammar use in writing and (academic) vocabulary;
  3. Distinguish between the different genres in academic writing (research-based and scholarly analysis) and apply the conventions of the relevant form in your own articles and Ph.D. dissertation;
  4. Recognize and remedy problems in your own articles and long-form texts with respect to logical argumentation and/or the discussion of evidence;
  5. Properly apply the reference style used in your field;
  6. Effectively proofread your own texts and incorporate feedback from your peers, teacher and dissertation supervisor into your own text.

This course is meant for all (PhD) researchers, regardless of your current level. We do recommend you have at least a C1 level as demonstrated in the English Assessment.
