Portuguese for beginners

In this course you, will learn the basics of Portuguese. All skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) are covered, but the course focuses mainly on oral communication. You will soon be able to have short conversations in Portuguese.

All practice activities focus on practical and realistic situations, such as introducing yourself, exchanging personal information, describing your city or neighborhood, and shopping. You will complete various individual and group assignments so that you can immediately put into practice what you have learned.

During class you, will also learn about the differences between Portuguese of Portugal and Portuguese of Brazil. You will learn to understand both variants and can choose which variant you want to do your writing and oral assignments in.

By the end of the course, you will have reached level A1+ of the European Framework of Reference. You will then be able to:

  • give and receive personal information, such as: age, date of birth, nationality, profession, academic studies, work experience, place of residence, marital status, family and personal relationships, habits, and hobbies.
  • have conversations with practical purposes, such as shopping, ordering in a restaurant, booking accommodation and transportation, and asking for addresses and opening hours;
  • describe routines and habits;
  • asking and expressing preferences and opinions and whether you agree or disagree;
  • exchange experiences about the past and plans for the future;
