Minors and electives at Tilburg School of Economics and Management

In the first semester of the third year most TiSEM bachelors have a ‘mobility window’ where you can choose what you want to do. One option is a minor and / or elective(s). On this page we give you more information about the TiSEM minors that we offer and the options that you have in choosing a minor and / or elective(s) per program.

How to choose your minor and electives

A minor is a set of three specialized courses in a certain field.

  • The most obvious choice for a minor is to choose one in the field you are good at and want to continue in (MSc / career). It will deepen and/ or broaden your knowledge. 
  • Another option is to use your minor to explore a field you might not have learned a lot about yet or even build a free minor, consisting of minor courses from different minors.
  • You can also choose one or two minor courses as elective courses.

Step 1: Get started

The rules for taking a minor and / or electives can be different per program so start by checking the requirements of your program.

Bachelor Bedrijfskunde

In the first semester of the third year, students of the Bachelor Bedrijfskunde can either:

  • Go on exchange (30 ECTS)
  • Do an internship (24 ECTS) plus electives (6 ECTS )
  • Do a minor (18 ECTS) plus electives (12 ECTS )

You can choose your electives based on the following requirements:

  • It is a 2nd or 3rd year Bachelor's course (1st year courses are not accepted as electives).
  • 4 out of 5 courses must be in the field of Economics and Business.
  • The content of the course does not overlap with the content of the compulsory courses of the BE program.
  • You meet the entry requirements, if applicable and you are not excluded from the course (“This course is only for BSc XXX students”).
  • 1 course can be taken outside TiSEM but you have to ask approval up front via the digital form Request approval for electives.
  • It is NOT a skills course and NOT a language. 

Suggestions to fill the electives:

  • Take another MINOR course.
  • Browse other bachelor programs at TiSEM: BSc Economics, BSc Econometrics and Operational Research, BSc Economics & Business Economics in the OSIRIS Catalog.
  • Browse for instance BSc Global Law, BSc Public Governance, BSc Human Resource studies, BSc Organization Studies in the OSIRIS Catalog.

Bachelor International Business Administration

In the first semester of the third year, students of the Bachelor International Business Administration can either:

  • Go on exchange (30 ECTS)
  • Do an internship (24 ECTS) plus electives (6 ECTS )
  • Do a minor (18 ECTS) plus electives (12 ECTS )

You can choose your electives based on the following requirements:

  • It is a 2nd or 3rd year Bachelor's course (1st year courses are not accepted as electives).
  • The content is related to the field   business/management/ economics.
  • The content of the course does not overlap with the content of the compulsory courses of the IBA program.
  • You meet the entry requirements, if applicable and you are not excluded from the course (“This course is only for BSc XXX students”).
  • It is NOT a skills course and NOT a language.
  • 1 course can be taken outside TiSEM but you have to ask approval up front via the digital form:  https://owb.uvt.nl/student_home/.
  • Electives can be taken in either semester 1 or semester 2.

Suggestions to fill the electives:

  • Take another MINOR course.
  • One of the IBA year 2 courses: Global Sustainable Leadership (30J216-B-6) or Information Management for IBA (30J303-B-6). You can take the second-year semester 2 elective which you did not choose in the second year.
  • Programming in R and Python (30L112-B-6). This is a year one course but is by exception allowed to follow as an elective.
  • Browse other bachelor programs at TiSEM: BSc Economics, BSc Econometrics and Operational Research, BSc Economics & Business Economics in the OSIRIS Catalog.
  • Browse for instance BSc Global Law, BSc Public Governance, BSc Human Resource studies, BSc Organization Studies the OSIRIS Catalog.

Bachelor Economics

In the first semester of the third year, students of the Bachelor Economics can either:

  • Go on exchange (30 ECTS)
  • Do a minor (18 ECTS) plus electives (12 ECTS )

You can choose your electives based on the following requirements:

  • The course is offered in English;
  • It is a 2nd or 3rd year Bachelor's course (1st year courses are not accepted as electives);
  • The content is related to the field business/management/economics
  • The content of the course does not overlap with the content of the compulsory courses of the ECO program;
  • It is NOT a skills course and NOT a language course
  • 1 course of max 6 ECTS is allowed outside TISEM

Suggestions to fill the electives:

  • Take another MINOR course, or an IBA course.
  • Browse for instance BSc Global Law, BSc Public Governance, BSc Human Resource studies, BSc Organization Studies the OSIRIS Catalog.

Bachelor Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation

In the first semester of the third year, students of the Bachelor Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation either go on exchange or stay in the Netherlands to follow a minor program.

If you do not go on exchange, you have a few options:

  • Follow a TiSEM minor (18 ECTS) in combination with two electives (12 ECTS): see here below for the TiSEM minors that we offer.

Please note: not all TiSEM minors are available for E&BI students. Check the exact options and the rules for choosing the electives on the E&BI canvas page: Minor options for E&BI.

  • You also have the option to:
    • follow a Minor program (30 ECTS) at another Dutch research university;
    • follow a minor at another Tilburg University School (18 ECTS) in combination with two electives (12 ECTS)

Bachelor Economie en Bedrijfseconomie

In the Bachelor Economie en Bedrijfseconomie you do not follow a minor but you can choose one or two minor courses (6/ 12 ECTS) as an elective for your program.

Bachelor Fiscale Economie

In the Bachelor Fiscale Economie you do not follow a minor but you can choose one minor course (6 ECTS) as an elective for your program. 

The most important requirements for the electives are:

  • First year Bachelor's courses or Master's courses are not allowed.
  • The courses should also not overlap with courses from your program.

Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research

In the Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research you do not follow a minor but you can choose one minor course (6 ECTS) as an elective for your program.

Please note: 

  • This minor is open to all TiSEM bachelor student who have passed at least 15 ECTS of mathematics and statistics courses, of which at least 5 ECTS of mathematics and 5 ECTS of statistics
  • In addition, to be able to join and participate in the courses students need to have Python Programming skills.

Minor Management courses 

Are you an International Administration student? Please be aware, you cannot choose the course International Comparative Management of the Management minor because it overlaps with Comparative & Cross-Cultural Management. Instead you are allowed to choose one course from the Entrepreneurship or the Information Management minor.

Quantitative minor (only for Bachelor Economics students)

The Quantitative minor is for TiSEM Bachelor Economics students who want to deepen their knowledge in quantitative subjects and be better prepared for a research master. The minor includes 3 courses taught by the Econometrics department: two mathematics courses, Mathematical Analysis and Linear Algebra, and one course in game theory, called Games and Economic Behavior.  All three courses will be taught in English and offered in semester 1 of the academic year.

Each of these courses can only be chosen in combination with the other two that belong to the minor, not individually.

Free minor

You can also choose a free minor. This means that you choose three courses from the different minors that we offer and create your own personal minor. It gives you the opportunity to expand your knowledge in a variety of different business aspects.  Besides the three minor courses you also choose two electives. 

Make sure the lectures and exams don't overlap.

Below you can find the different minors that we offer and you can read more about each minor course, in order to help you make a choice. Check the course information in the OSIRIS course catalog, some courses have extra requirements, before you enroll.

Step 3: Choose your courses and enroll

You can enroll for the courses as of mid-August.

  • Step 1: Enroll for your minor (if you follow a complete minor) as a set of courses in OSIRIS. See this video on how to enroll for a minor.
  • Step 2: Enroll for each course separately (minor and elective courses).

Please note: Lectures and exams from courses in a minor don’t overlap,  but the lectures and exams from courses in other minors and electives can overlap. There are many options so it is not possible to plan all the courses with no overlap. Therefore, always check if the courses you want to join do not overlap. Also, check the examination days.
