Zico Martin, Product Manager at VRS Railway Industry BV

"I am currently responsible for product management at a company that, among other things, makes signals and level crossings for the railways. Project management is a large part of my work. I meet with my team about costs, deadlines and progress. We look at risks and mitigating measures."

How do you remember your time at Tilburg University?

A wonderful time in my life, in which I was able to develop myself in different areas. The master’s program Organization and Management Studies has changed my view on organizations significantly.

How was the transition from study life to work life?

The program mainly helped me to think differently; more critical, more nuanced, and more holistic. Also, work is a completely different world from university. The transition has been considerable. Working together with colleagues, the work itself, time pressure and deadlines are examples of things you only really learn by working.

I supervise the development of new products and ensure an appropriate product portfolio for our markets.

Can you describe your work?

I am currently responsible for product management at a company that manufactures signals and level crossings for railroads. I supervise the development of new products and ensure an appropriate product portfolio for our markets.

What does a typical workday or workweek look like?

Project management is a big part of my work. I meet with my team to discuss cost, deadlines, and progress. We look at risks and mitigating measures. The different projects that I lead, use the same group of engineers. I determine priorities in their work for them and with them. In between, I do project administration; schedules, risk registers, and financial statements.
