Educational background

After finishing my pre-university education (VWO) at my secondary school in Breda, I started studying International Hotel Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences (NHTV). I finished this fast-track program in three years instead of four. After graduating, I worked in a hotel for one year. Last year, I started my pre-Master of Organization Studies at Tilburg University.

Why did you choose the pre-Master of Organization Studies?

The Master of Organization Studies fitted my interests as it is a broad program and the focus is on people (social and behavioral sciences) rather than on management. Obviously the main focus in this program is on organizations and this complements my previous education perfectly.

My experiences so far

I started my pre-Master in September 2015 and, so far, it has been a very enjoyable experience. First I had to get used to thinking on a scientific rather than a practical level. The lectures in big lecture halls were not new to me, as I had had lectures in my previous school, too. However, the amount of reading material and information to take in is a lot more than in applied sciences education. I have around 8-10 lectures/ lab sessions or practicals a week.

In addition, I spend 10-20 hours studying, sometimes more during exams or near deadlines. I would not say it is an easy program, but the pre-Master is very doable for applied sciences students. As long as you attend the lectures and practicals and as long as you keep up with the reading, you will be able to pass the exams. I have passed all my exams so far and I am satisfied with the program at this university.

My experiences with my fellow students are very good. I’m part of a really nice group of people. Everybody is at the same level and is very motivated to complete this program and to help each other.

Why Tilburg university?

I’ve chosen Tilburg University mainly because of the program of Organization Studies it offers. Before I started Hotel Management, I also looked at this program. I visited the university several times at open days and evenings and I always felt it was a pleasant environment. Besides, I had some friends who study here as well.

What are your experiences with Tilburg University?

My experiences with Tilburg University are very positive so far. I feel comfortable at the university and there is a nice atmosphere. There are enough places to study or to sit with your fellow students.

What are your expectations for the future?

I hope to find a job that really fits me and that satisfies me. At this point, I do not have a clear idea of what kind of job I would like to do, so I hope maybe an internship or traineeship will help me find out what suits me. Something I am sure of is that I want to be in a management or supervisory position.

Any tips for new students?

I advise new students starting a pre-Master to  show up at all lectures and seminars. This is really helpful and will enable you to pass the exams relatively easily. If students are still in doubt whether this is the right program for them, I would recommend them to visit the university for a day and attend some lectures with other pre-Master’s students. This  will help you to make a decision.
