Have you decided to continue your education after your Bachelor's degree with a Master's degree in Sociology? Are you looking for a unique experience abroad to prepare yourself for a career in an international organization? Do you want to challenge yourself academically and distinguish yourself from your fellow students? Then we have the challenge for you! We have a unique, English-taught double degree program with the University of Trento in Italy.

This double degree program in Sociology has a duration of two-years (for 120 ECTS). The Double Degree program results in two academic Master titles, one in Sociology from Tilburg University and one in Sociology and Social Research from the University of Trento. All students will spend semester 1 and 2 of the first academic year in Trento, and semester 3 and 4 of the second academic year (including writing the Master’s thesis) in Tilburg. The educational program in Trento focuses on political research, social policy and qualitative research.

Courses

Year 1 - Coursework at University of Trento

60 ECTS of the MSc in Sociology and Social Research, more specifically:

First semester

    • Survey Design for Social Research: 3 ECTS
    • Survey Design for Social Research Lab: 1.5 ECTS
    • Quantitative Methods: 6 ECTS
    • Quantitative Methods Lab: 3 ECTS
    •  Qualitative Methods: 3 ECTS
    •  Statistics for Opinion Research: 6 ECTS
    •  Credit seminars of 6 ECTS (can also be in second semester)


    Second semester

      • Survey Design for Social Research: 3 ECTS
      • Survey Design for Social Research Lab: 1.5 ECTS
      • Qualitative Methods:3 ECTS
      • Qualitative Methods Lab: 3 ECTS
      • Culture and Lifestyles: 6 ECTS
      • Research Methods in Political Science: 6 ECTS
      • Research Methods in History: 6 ECTS
      • Methodology lab: 3 ECTS

      Year 2: Coursework at Tilburg University

      60 ECTS of the MSc in Sociology, more specifically:



      *The Master’s Thesis Sociology for Trento students will be written under joint supervision of faculty members of University of Trento and Tilburg University.

      Tilburg University Students

      Requirements

      Tilburg students who continue their education at Tilburg University must:

      •  have fulfilled the requirements of the bachelor program in Sociology, the pre-master program in Sociology or a bachelor in Social Sciences with a minor in Sociology;
      • have proven their sufficient motivation and English skills through a selection interview.

      You are selected at the beginning of your Master's program Sociology by the Academic Coordinators of Trento University and Tilburg University.

      University of Trento Students

      Requirements

      Students who start at the University of Trento must:

      • have fulfilled the credit requirements of the first year (75%) of the MSc program in Sociology and Social Research at Trento before they enter the second year at TiU;
      • obtained a GPA of at least 25/30;
      • have proven their sufficient motivation and English skills through a selection interview (with a minimum of level B2 of the Common European Framework).

      You are selected during your first Master's year by the Academic Coordinators of Trento University and Tilburg University.

      Dutch students with a Dutch diploma

      Requirements

      External students who start the program at Tilburg University must:

      • hold a university degree (undergraduate and/or graduate) in a –preferably- relevant discipline, e.g. the field of sociology, social sciences, or humanities, and have a graduation date no later than 1 September 2018;
      • have adequate knowledge of research methods and statistics;
      • have demonstrated their English language proficiency (C1 CEFR) by submitting the results of either TOEFL (minimum 577 paperbased / 100 internet-based), IELTS (minimum 6.5 overall, no part less than 6.0), or Cambridge Proficiency or Cambridge Advanced (A-B-C).
      • have proven their sufficient motivation through a letter.

      Tuiton fee

      For Tilburg University and External Students

      For EU/EEA students

      Year 1: 2018-2019 in Trento

      Students start the DD program in Trento. However, students are registered as full year degree students at TiU and pay TiU tuition fee for 60 ECTS. Students will also be registered as UniTrento students, but will not pay UniTrento tuition fees except for an administrative fee of € 140 (TDS).

      Year 2: 2019-2020 in Tilburg

      Students are registered at Tilburg as fulltime degree students. Students pay Tilburg tuition fee.

      For Non-EEA-students

      Year 1: 2018-2019 in Trento

      Students start the DD program in Trento. However, students are registered as full year degree students at TiU. and pay TiU tuition fee for 60 ECTS. There are tuition waivers available for n-EEA DD candidates to stimulate the number for the first cohorts. Students will also be registered as UniTrento students, but will not pay UniTrento tuition fees except for an administrative fee of € 140 (TDS).

      Year 2: 2019-2020 in Tilburg

      Students are registered at Tilburg as fulltime degree students. Students pay Tilburg tuition fee. There are tuition waivers available for n-EEA DD candidates.
