Student Nina Waller about the program:

Why Tilburg University?

fter finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Commerciële Economie at Arnhem Business University (in Dutch: Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen), I decided to do the Pre-Master’s and Master’s program of Strategic Management at Tilburg University. The main reason for choosing this university was its good reputation and its history. Tilburg University started as an economics university almost a century ago. It is easy to reach by car and train. The train station is just a five-minute walk from the nice and cosy campus. All the buildings are located relatively closely to each other, there are several student workplaces spread around the campus, and the library has many facilities and good opening hours

The Master’s program

During the Master’s program, I took courses like International Management, Corporate-Level Strategy, Decision Making, and Research Methods. These courses all provided interactive lectures with presentations by the professor, students, and professionals. Discussions and papers with group participation were also part of the courses. All courses are related to each other: Decision Making is necessary in International Management and also in Corporate-Level Strategy. Corporate-Level Strategy is also part of International Organizations and therefore also for International Management, etc.

The final stage of the Master is writing the Master’s thesis. I decided to participate in a group of four students. We all have our own projects, but the main subject is the same. This way of working provides feedback not only from your supervisor, but also from your fellow students. My thesis is about inter-organizational relationships among Dutch MNEs, a topic that is covered in almost all courses of the program.

My experience

I have had a great time at Tilburg University. The students, teachers, and other staff members are open-minded and friendly. There is an informal atmosphere. Of course there are also some strict rules concerning lectures and examinations, although I believe that that’s reasonable and it makes it clear what is expected. Professors and student advisors help you to finish your Pre-Master’s and Master’s program within a short time. With effort and commitment, it must be possible to finish your Master’s program within one year.

Besides studying, there are a lot of activities to participate in, for example, the Economic Business weeks Tilburg (EBT) where you meet companies and perhaps future employers. The faculty association Asset is also a nice group to join. They support you in every way, from educational services and informal activities to contacts with companies. During my Master’s year, I organized the Consultancy Day 2012 together with Asset | Strategy & Logistics and Asset | FIRST International. This activity helped me to learn skills like negotiating, meeting companies, and leading a team.

Tilburg city

I was a commuting student, which meant that I didn’t live in Tilburg but traveled to the university by train when I had lectures or group meetings. I decided to stay in my home town, since the Pre-Master’s and Master’s tracks just took two years and I didn’t have lectures every day of the week. The few times I went into the city, I had a great time. There are a lot of pubs, nice restaurants, and the shopping area is also great. Several students who rented a room in Tilburg told me that I had made the wrong decision to stay in my home town, as Tilburg’s student life is great.

Career perspectives

After graduating from the Master’s program in Strategic Management, I want to focus on consultancy and management vacancies. Applying for (management) traineeships is also a good start of your career.  I have decided to apply for a management traineeship and if this hasn’t worked out by the end of August, I will start to look at the regular job vacancies.
