Artificial Intelligence - Prof. Eric Postma

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the driving forces of today's economy. Recent developments in AI gave rise to breakthroughs on a variety of tasks. Think about self-driving cars, smart cameras, surveillance systems, robotic manufacturing, machine translations and internet searches. The masterclass on artificial intelligence from Professor Eric Postma provides an overview of the fundamentals of AI and demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of state-of-the-art AI systems. Specifically, societal implications of AI will be discussed. Subsequently, you will be challenged to create value out of AI for your own organization.

The masterclass will update you on AI and its opportunities for your organization. You will:

  • Get an overview of the technological fundamentals of AI.
  • Get a good sense of the latest developments in AI, including strengths and weaknesses of state-of-the-art AI systems.
  • Be challenged to create value out of AI for your own organization.
  • Have the opportunity to brainstorm with experts and other participants about the use of AI in your organization.


  • Next to the technical fundamentals, the balance between humans and intelligent machines, and societal implications of AI will be highlighted.
  • Accessible explanations of the theoretical foundations of state-of-the-art AI systems will be interchanged with practical assignments so you have a first impression of what AI can do for your organization.

The masterclass is designed for those who are interested in AI, wonder how AI can create value for their organization and are interested in how to set-up an AI project. Participants should have a bachelor or academic background. The masterclass is for participants from both profit and not-profit organizations.

Typical participants are information managers, management, directors, business analysts, strategic advisers, supply chain and/or operations professional, marketing specialists and finance professionals. Participants do not need specific AI background knowledge. The training will dive quite deeply into the topic of AI, but in an understandable way for non-technical experts.

Module 2 State-of-the-art Insights into AI

Module 3: AI in Practice

  • Practical issues in implementing AI, including people and platforms.

Prof.dr. Eric Postma is Professor in Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University and at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. He is specialized in image processing, signal processing, affective computing, and deep learning. His best-known project is on the automatic analysis of paintings by Van Gogh in close collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum and the MoMa. Using advanced image analysis methods, Postma developed systems for determining the author of artworks. Currently, he is focusing on the analysis of human non-verbal behaviour (i.e., vocal and facial expressions) to automatically infer various aspects of pictures and videos of humans.



Academic insights and the use of various practical examples and assignments go hand in hand in this masterclass. Participants are challenged to think about the application of AI within their own (work) environment.


This masterclass requires some pre-readings (which will take approximate one hour in advance) in order to offer sufficient depth during the masterclass.

Eric Postma is a full professor at Tilburg University with specific expertise in artificial intelligence, cognition, cognitive model, cognitive science, computer models, computer simulation,   knowledge representation, knowledge technology and visual perception.

Blockchain and other Distributed Ledgers - Prof. Eddy Vaassen 

Date: 5 June 2018

Location: Tilburg University Campus

Eddy Vaassen and Joël Happé will introduce you to the world of blockchain technology along with other types of distributed ledgers, including private distributed ledgers and permissioned public distributed ledgers, and illustrate these with various use cases. To help you understand the functioning of this technology Eddy discusses the basic terminology of distributed ledgers, such as nodes, hashing, encryption, mining, smart contracts, oracles, and tokenization. Joël will illustrate the Seal application of blockchain that he is currently working on and share his view on future developments in distributed ledger technology. After attending this masterclass, you will have a basic understanding of distributed ledger technology and its potential use. This knowledge enables you to identify relevant use cases in your own practice and pinpoint the solutions blockchain and other distributed ledgers can offer.

Virtual, Mixed & Augmented Reality - Prof. Max Louwerse

During this masterclass, Professor Max Louwerse will update you on the most recent, innovative applications of virtual, mixed and augmented reality. In addition to this, you will get an introduction into measuring behavior in virtual reality environments. Of course, you can best understand the possibilities of virtual reality by trying it out yourself. Therefore, you will experience first-hand how close it is to the real world by visiting the DAF Technology Lab on campus and even by building simulations yourself!

Decision-making under uncertainty - Prof. Kuno Huisman

Decision-making is often done under time pressure and with limited research into possible alternatives. This expert workshop gives you an introduction into the decision quality concept, which was originally developed at Stanford University. This concept has proven to be key for staff at ASML to successfully execute their company’s strategy. Cyber Security for Corporates - Prof. Lokke Moerel

The Masterclass Series for Alumni will be hosted at inspiring locations throughout the Netherlands, in Tilburg, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven and Utrecht.

Time schedule

Masterclasses for alumni will typically start at 9.30 hrs. and end by 16.30 hrs. with a networking drink. In case of a different time schedule, this will be clearly communicated.


To help alumni engage in lifelong learning, alumni pay a fee of € 175 per masterclass. Non-alumni pay € 595 per masterclass. The fee includes all course materials and lunch.

Your profile

The masterclasses are open to all alumni of Tilburg University. Not an alumna/alumnus from Tilburg University, but interested to join one or more masterclasses? The masterclasses are open to you as well.

Teaching methods

The masterclasses offer a combination of keynotes, lectures, workshops and discussions led by experts in the field. All sessions are characterized by a mix of theoretical and practical aspects of the subjects discussed.


The masterclass Customer Insights and Data-Driven Marketing will be taught in English. The language of the other masterclasses depends on the attending participants. If everyone speaks Dutch, the masterclass will be taught in Dutch. If not, the masterclass will be in English.

General terms and conditions


You can register for this course only by filling out the online registration form on the website. You will immediately receive a digital confirmation. Your registration is complete if you have been admitted (for alumni this means: after your status has been checked) and have paid the course fee.

Course fee

The course fee is payable within 14 days after receipt of the invoice. No VAT is charged for this course.


Tilburg University reserves the right to change parts of the course in the event of unforeseen circumstances or recent developments. You will be informed of any changes as soon as possible.


Cancellation by a course participant needs to take place in writing. If you cancel in writing not later than four weeks before the first course day, the course fee will be refunded. Tilburg University reserves the right to cancel the course if an insufficient number of participants have registered.


After every course day, the course participants will be given an evaluation form. It is very important for the further development of the post-academic courses to receive the course participants’ feedback through these evaluation forms. The information obtained will be used as much as possible in organizing and designing future courses.


The course participant can report any complaints to Tilburg University in writing. The complaint needs to be described in detail. Complaints do not suspend the obligation to pay the course fee. If the complaint is upheld by Tilburg University, the course participant will receive a reduction of the course fee.
