Masterclass for PhD Supervisors
Are you a (co-)PhD supervisor with at least one year of supervisory experience and interested in further developing your skills in guiding PhD researchers? Or would you like to take the opportunity to reflect on your past experiences in supervising PhD researchers?
An effective supervisor recognizes both its strengths and weaknesses, tailoring its supervisory approach to the specific needs and circumstances of the PhD researcher. This aligns with Tilburg University's leadership vision, known as Connected Leading.
In cooperation with “Hertz training for scientists”, Tilburg University organizes one-day masterclasses for (co-)supervisors of PhD researchers. The emphasis of the day is on the interaction between the supervisor and the PhD researcher.
Please note that the masterclass requires experience with PhD supervision either at Tilburg University or at another university. It is not an introduction to supervision.
The masterclass focuses on:
- choosing the right supervision strategy, depending on the situation and the PhD researcher;
- learning to communicate effectively, possibly taking cultural differences into account;
- providing constructive feedback;
- exchanging experiences.
In the afternoon, you can promptly apply the knowledge you've gained in practical conversational scenarios with a training actor.

All Tilburg University (co-)supervisors currently supervising PhD candidates
When?
- Masterclass 2: Thu April 4, 2024 for supervisors with 1 to 8 years of experience and/or a maximum of 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
- Masterclass 3: Fri May 24, 2024 for supervisors with 1 to 8 years of experience and/or a maximum of 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
- Masterclass 4: Fri November15, 2024 for supervisors with 1 to 8 years of experience and/or a maximum of 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
- Masterclass 5: Mon November 25, 2024 for supervisors with 1 to 8 years of experience and/or a maximum of 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
- Masterclass B: Tue December 3, 2024 for supervisors with more than 8 years of experience and/or with more than 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
- Masterclass 6: Wed December 11, 2024 for supervisors with 1 to 8 years of experience and/or a maximum of 4 PhDs who defended their thesis.
Number of participants?
Maximum 6 per group (more experienced) or 12 (less experienced).

Costs are covered by the Schools, making participation in the training free of charge for attendees.
If you have registered but are unable to participate, please inform us at least 2 weeks prior to the workshop by emailing integritytraining@tilburguniversity.edu.
A €500 fee will be charged to your School for cancellations within the last 2 weeks or in the case of a no-show.
