Igor Mayer appointed professor of Playful Organizations & Learning Systems

As of January 1, 2021 Dr. Igor Mayer will be endowed professor of Playful Organizations & Learning Systems at the department of Organization Studies (OS) of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences for a duration of five years for 0.2 fte. Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) is the founding institute, where Igor Mayer is currently professor of Serious Games, Innovation & Society.

Can we measure or predict a team's performance by having its members play a game? Can an organization prepare for the implementation of a large-scale project using a business war game? How can game technology help to sustainably structure and manage the North Sea?

Igor Mayer is an expert in the field of gaming simulation, serious games and digital realities which includes Virtual and Augmented Reality, for the purpose of policy analysis, organization and management. His research focuses on the design, application and research of gaming technology, gaming principles and gaming concepts for understanding and improving team, organizations’ and complex system's performance. This closely matches Tilburg University's Organization Studies department's education and research in the field of gaming simulation for organizational change. The new professor will connect the various worlds of gaming research and gaming education at universities and universities of applied sciences.

Igor Mayer (1965, Detmold, Germany) studied Management and Policy Sciences at the Radboud University Nijmegen from 1984 to 1991. After his military service he worked on his doctorate research at the OS department (1992 - 1998) of what was then known as the Katholieke Universiteit Brabant, while also working for TNO and IVA Beleidsonderzoek en Advies. Between 1998 and 2015 he was a senior lecturer at TU Delft's School of Technology, Administration and Management where he founded and lead the Policy Gaming research group. Previously Mayer has also been a guest professor at the School of Management and Economics of the Beijing Institute of Technology (China 2015 - 2016) and at the Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Jakarta (Indonesia, 2019). Since 2017 he has been a guest professor at the Public Administration department of the Dalian University of Technology in China. At the moment he is active as professor of  Serious Games, Innovation & Society at Breda University of Applied Sciences' Academy for Games and Media (AGM). Mayer has over 150 publications to his name. He supervised six PhD candidates of which three were award winners.


Igor Mayer has initiated and carried many serious gaming projects for clients such as the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Port of Rotterdam, Shell, Liander, Zeelandia, Vereniging Deltametropool, the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Raad voor de Rechtspraak. Mayer is co-founder and former board member of the Dutch Simulation and Gaming Association (SAGAnet), the European Network of Excellence in Serious Games (GALA) and the European Serious Game Society.
