Science for kids

Impact 2 min. Marie Roelofs

Tilburg University Junior aims to introduce children to science and the university in a playful way. They do this with various initiatives, such as the Junior University for upper primary school pupils. The first lecture was held in autumn 2005 and since then the university organises several lectures a year which are attended by hundreds of children.

During Junior University, Tilburg University professors give lectures (1 hour) in a packed auditorium of the university on different topics: from tears to robots, from super-diversity to the brain. This way, children aged 9 to 14 can experience what it is like to study at the university and learn about the research being done there. The lectures are sometimes during school hours (for classes), and sometimes after school so that children can come with their parents. Participation in the Junior University is free of charge.

Exploring in an interactive learning environment

Through Junior Knowledge Bank, children, parents, teachers and other interested parties can learn about various scientific topics by following online teaching programmes. Several teaching modules have been developed, such as a teaching module on super-diversity for children and a teaching module on philosophy at primary school. The aim of the lesson programmes is to challenge children and offer stimulating topics from which they can learn.
