Stopping global warming is an illusion, even if the climate pacts are successful. So are we prepared for rising seas, flooding rivers, and sinking cities? Rolling Stone journalist Jeff Goodell has examined this coming catastrophe and searched for options to deal with its consequences.

The water will come

By the end of this century, hundreds of millions of people will be retreating from the world’s shores: a harrowing crisis of social, environmental, and fiscal measures is in store for us. There are no overall solutions that will protect us from the drowning of the world as we know it.

Adaptation and interests

Academic Forum: Book Jeff Goodell

Goodell has interviewed prominent engineers, city mayors, property developers, and politicians. He has also travelled to the front lines of the climate change epidemic, revealing to us the water world into which our planet is quickly transforming. On the basis of several cases, he will explain what exactly is happening. He also points to the dilemmas and difficulties associated with the much needed adaptation, for instance, citizens who need to move, mayors who want to be reelected, the poor who are in adverse positions, and so on.

Tilburg on the sea?

Professor of Environmental Law Jonathan Verschuuren will give insights into the current state of affairs in Europe and the Netherlands. He will explain that we may be too self-confident about our coastlines, and that we need to adapt more drastically.
