Friederike van der Jagt

Friederike van der Jagt, IT and data protection lawyer at Stibbe. End of 2014, Friederike won the Award  Legal Woman, Upcoming Talent of The Year 2014, given out by Legal Women, Association for female lawyers and attorneys.

"Due to my field of expertise I have regular contact with Tilburg University, since a lot of experts are connected to Tilburg. Such as Corien Prins, Colette Cuijpers, Ronald Leenes and Sjaak Nouwt. In 2012 I attended a specialization course on privacy and personal data at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT)."

Why did you choose to study at Tilburg?

"I really wanted to study European and International Law, which was highly ranked in Maastricht, Nijmegen and Tilburg. When I first visited Tilburg University, I was instantly sold because of the atmosphere on campus. Since then I have never second guessed my decision; in my opinion the combination of top-quality education and the typical Brabant atmosphere (‘Brabantse gezelligheid’) is the best foundation for my career in law."

Do you have a favorite professor?

"I do not really have a favorite professor. However, I have a favorite teacher, Maartje de Visser, who was my supervisor on my second thesis in competition law and sports. Enthusiastic, helpful and very competent. Sadly, she moved to Singapore. I also have fond memories of Colette Cuijpers. She encouraged me – in my first thesis – to write a chapter on the privacy of online shoppers. To this day I am very thankful she did, ever since privacy law has become my passion."

Have you got an anecdote from your student life?
"When I first started my studies I did not have my own place to live, therefore I commuted daily between Zeist and Tilburg. I often stayed over at a friend’s place and was able to store some of my belongings there. I remember this one particular time I carried a large, heavy backpack and I was not able to get on the train. I actually recall being pushed out of it! Eventually, I was allowed to sit in the front of the train to Tilburg, right next to train driver! And well, the anecdotes from my time at Plato and sorority Amendus Amandus…. I would like to keep those to myself."

How has your career developed?
"During my studies I worked as a secretary at the Amsterdam law firm Van Doorne. This was followed by a student-internship at the Intellectual Property Law and Privacy department. I switched to the ‘Zuidas’-office of the law firm Stibbe through a masterclass. It is also here that I assisted as a paralegal. At the end of my studies I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to start as a junior-lawyer atVan Doorne, at the exact same department I completed my internship. After about a year and a half I switched to the Competition Law department, from which I was employed twice at our office in Curaçao. A time in which I gained a lot of useful experience. After four and a half years at Van Doorne, my former employer Stibbe was interested in my services. They gave me the opportunity to fully concentrate on privacy related issues. This is something I have been doing for the last three years. Because of my field of expertise I have regular contact with Tilburg University since a lot of experts are connected to Tilburg; such as Corien Prins, Colette Cuijpers, Ronald Leenes and Sjaak Nouwt. In 2012 I also attended a specialization course on privacy and personal data at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT)."

What are your ambitions?

"I am planning to work my way up the ladder in my profession as a lawyer. I am also interested in writing a PhD in my field of law, this however has to fit in with my current, practice-based job."

What role does Tilburg University play in your life?
"Besides the fact that I regularly bump into ‘Tilburgers’ in my profession, I am also a ‘Friend of Cobbenhagen’. Furthermore, I still have regular contact with most of my Tilburg friends. My circle of friends mainly consists of people I met during my period at Plato. We see each other quite often. For example, we meet up for Christmas and New Year’s drinks and I am currently planning on visiting a friend from Tilburg who nowadays lives and works in Colombia."
