Political correctness

The term ‘political correctness’ has become overused in recent years. But what political correctness actually means is rarely brought into the conversation. A dictionary definition is: ‘avoidance of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against’. Although this definition suggests that there is a positive ideology behind the term, the phrase often has negative connotations when used in news items. Is political correctness a force of good in society or does it hinder free speech?

Your opinion on political correctness

We want to discuss this topic together with you. What do you think about political correctness? Does it depend on the country / culture you are from? Does it depend on your political views? Do we need political correctness in politics, academia, and society at large? Or should we think about alternative ways of discussion?

We hope to see you there and to hear your opinion on political correctness!

Debatable

Debatable is a news event at Tilburg University that critically reflects about chosen topics. Our main goal is to stimulate the discussion and debate on campus about the news. During these sessions, a panel will discuss current day topics. The panel consists of students and experts from various backgrounds. You, the audience, can freely mingle with the discussion to broaden everyone's view on the current day topics.
