Machiavelli: father of modern political science

Niccolo Machiavalli (1469-1527), the author of The Prince, is widely considered a trailblazer of modern political thought. But controversy has surrounded him and his most known work for centuries. The key to understanding Machiavelli’s Prince lies in his own political experience, his theory of history and his uncannily modern sense of the ironic.

In this lecture, Randall Lesaffer will analyse the Florentine writer’s political ideas by reading them against the backdrop of his remarkable political career and the ideas he took from the civic humanist tradition of Florence that was crucial to his intellectual formation and background.
