Applicants with Dutch nationality AND Dutch HBO Bachelor diploma

Admission and Application procedure for the Premaster's program in Sociology

This procedure must be followed only by Dutch applicants whose HBO Bachelor's diploma was issued in the Netherlands. Only Dutch HBO graduates can apply directly to the Premaster's program. University graduates can not apply for our Premaster’s program directly and always need to apply for the Master’s program.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Premaster's program in Sociology you must have completed a HBO Bachelor's program that gives direct access to the Premaster's program. Please check if you can apply for the Pre-Master's program of your choice. See the overview of HBO Bachelor's programs that give direct access to the Premaster's program. (in Dutch)

If your HBO Bachelor's program is not on the page mentioned above, you have to submit an application and the examination board then assesses whether your degree qualifies you for admission to this premaster's program on a case by case basis. This procedure takes a maximum of six weeks.

Access to the Master's program Sociology

If you have completed the Premaster's program in Sociology successfully and have passed all the exams (30 ECTS), you are automatically admitted to the Master's program in Sociology.

Application Procedure

Applicants who wish to be admitted to the Premaster's program in Sociology must take the following steps.

Step 1: Register in Studielink

Go to Studielink and follow the registration procedure, which is explained step by step. Make sure that you choose the correct Premaster’s program (the one that you have been admitted to). If you choose a Premaster’s program to which you have not been admitted, then the enrollment process will not proceed properly.

Make sure that you choose the correct enrollment date: as of 1 September or as of 1 February. If you choose for 1 February you have to move through the same steps as for the September enrollment. However, you have to choose for ‘February enrollment’ in Studielink (do NOT choose ‘interim enrollment’).

Registration in Studielink can take place concurrently with an application for admission (Step 2).

Step 2: Submit an application for admission the Examining Board

In addition to registering in Studielink, you must also submit an application for admission to the Examination Board of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Make sure your name, addres, zip code, city, e-mailadres and date of birth is on your application document. Please make sure you enclose all the required documents with your application package:

  • Certified copy of your HBO Bachelor's diploma
  • Certified copy of your transcript of Records/list of grades
  • Photocopy of your valid passport or your identification card
  • If applicable a copy of your VWO diploma and list of grades

It then assesses whether your degree qualifies you for admission to this premaster's program on a case by case basis. This procedure takes a maximum of six weeks.

If you do not have your HBO Bachelor's diploma at the time of application but you will obtain your diploma in the current academic year, you can ask the Examination Board if admission to the Master's program would be possible, based on your combination of subjects. However, you will only receive the formal letter confirming your admission to the Premaster's program from the Examination Board after a certified copy of your Bachelor's diploma has been received.

You can only enroll at Tilburg University after you have received your letter of admission from the Examination Board.

Application deadlines

Your complete application package, including all required documents detailed above, must be received by the Examination Board before 1 September (first intake moment) or 1 February (second intake moment). Lectures will start at the end of August or at the end of January.

The address of the Examination Board is:

Tilburg University

Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Examination Board, S 114

PO Box 90153

5000 LE Tilburg

Step 3: Notification from Examination Board

The Admissions Committee will process your application for admission and notify you of its decision. Check Studielink to make sure you are enrolled for the same program to which you have been admitted. If you are enrolled in the wrong program, then you should de-enroll for that program and then enroll in the correct program. If you have not yet registered in Studielink, you should do so as soon as possible!

Even after receiving notification of admission (possibly provisional*), you are NOT YET enrolled at the university. Proceed to step 4.

‘Provisionally admitted' means that you have to fulfill certain conditions before final admission. For example, you may still need to submit a degree certificate.

If the Admissions Committee notifies you that you have not been admitted, then please do not forget to cancel your registration for the program in Studielink. You may then register for another program if desired.

Step 4: Complete your registration at Tilburg University

Registration in Studielink does not mean you are automatically enrolled at Tilburg University. See Completion of enrollment for information on what you need to do to make sure you are properly enrolled for your degree program.

Step 5: Introduction Day Premaster's students

For a successful start of the Premaster's year the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences organises an Introduction Day for Premaster's students. More information.
