Bio

Since 2011, Professor Petri Embregts holds a Chair for ‘People with intellectual disabilities: Psychopathology and treatment’ at Tranzo, Tilburg University. That same year, she founded the Academic Collaborative Center Living with Intellectual Disabilities, which she has directed since then. Professor Embregts studied special education at Radboud University. 

In 1999, she defended her PhD thesis entitled Effects of video feedback on social behavior of youth with mild mental retardation. She has worked as a healthcare psychologist for the CCE, as an Assistant Professor at the Behavioral Science Institute at Radboud University. She also held the position of Director of Innovation and Science at Dichterbij and Professor of Care for people with intellectual disabilities at the HAN. At Tilburg University she served as professor occupying an endowed chair for the professional training program for healthcare psychologists, taking on the responsibilities of academic director at RINO Zuid. 

Expertise

Professor Embregts’ research focuses on improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and optimizing healthcare for and support of people with ID. Her most important research themes include: self-determination & experiential knowledge , family, quality of care and e-health. In addition, Embregts is well-versed in the field of sharing new scientific research with the professional healthcare and education practice. 

Embregts is a member of various national committees, including the Committee Care & Cure of the Scientific Advisory Board (WAR) of the Dutch Care Institute, the Expert Committee on Client’s Experiences Instruments (VGN) and the Accreditation Committee for interventions in long-term care. She is an editor of the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research and a editorial board member of NTz, the Dutch journal for care of people with an ID. Embregts is also president and initiator of the Dutch Association for Academic Collaborative Centers for ID.

 

Teaching

Over the last few years, Professor Petri Embregts has given lectures at Radboud University, for which she received the Education Award in 2005, and Tilburg University. Embregts also served as academic director at RINO Zuid for many years. She also gives countless guest lectures and public presentations at other universities, at healthcare organizations and other institutions. She continues to try and connect the academic perspective with topical issues and experiences from the healthcare practice and uses scientific knowledge to promote innovation. 

Collaboration

Within the AWVB, professor Embregts works closely with 17 healthcare organizations, the national special interest group for and by people with intellectual disabilities (LFB) and Tilburg University. She also collaborates on a structural basis with other educational institutions for the purpose of sharing knowledge with current and future healthcare professionals. In her role as president and initiator of the Association for Academic Collaborative Centers for Intellectual Disabilities, Embregts promotes national cooperation between the various Academic Collaborative Centers. In supervising PhD and other research, Embregts not only works with other researchers within the disability sector but also across sectors with colleagues in the field of elderly care, organizational science, job market and e-health. Finally, Embregts has established long-term collaborative relationships with international research groups, e.g. in England and Belgium.
