Cardinal Willebrands

Cardinal Willebrands Research Centre

The Cardinal Willebrands Research Centre (CWRC) carries the name of the late cardinal Johannes Gerardus Maria Willebrands, former archbishop of Utrecht and President to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Taking this heritage to heart implies a vast program for the CWRC.

The Centre devotes itself to promoting research on Willebrands’ lifelong commitment to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. It aims at conducting and supporting research on the history of ecumenism, on an international academic level. As is explained in the CWRC’s mission statement, this approach includes both research on a macro-level (focusing on the broad study of Catholic engagement in the ecumenical advance) and on a micro-level (focusing on the biography and role of individual ecumenical pioneers).
