On the 25th of June at 13.30h, our HRS colleague Sjanne Marie van den Groenendaal will defend her dissertation titled 'A career perspective on self-employment'.

In this dissertation, the heterogeneity in the large group of solo self-employed workers (more than 1.3 million in the Netherlands) is studied from a career perspective. The focus was on the career development of the solo self-employed and the employment relations with organizations. This dissertation shows that the solo self-employed differ in the reasons why they became solo self-employed, how they subsequently build up their career and how they prefer to shape the employment relations with organizations.

Based on her doctoral research, Sjanne Marie compiled a toolkit to advise clients on how to organize the employment relationships with the solo self-employed. The toolkit explains how organizations can organize this relationship, so they can makes optimal use of the flexibility and expertise of the solo self-employed and in the same time fulfilling the (development) needs of the solo self-employed. The innovative idea for developing this toolkit was awarded the NSvP PhD Innovation Grant 20-21 and the Societal Impact Award funded by the Tijdschrift voor HRM.

The toolkit contains practical tips based on scientific research, in the form of knowledge clips, blogs, a webinar and an ‘organization scan’. Organizations can use this scan to optimize their employment relationships with the solo self-employed.

Please contact Sjanne Marie van den Groenendaal for more information on her dissertation or the toolkit via S.M.E.vdnGroenendaal@tilburguniversity.edu.
