Last Thursday, June 30, the TAISIG Event 'AI for Society' took place. The joint initiative of Tilburg University, MindLabs and Data Week NL offered Artificial Intelligence enthusiasts and researchers the chance to come together, share knowledge and network with each other. Dr. Marie Postma led this afternoon full of engaging workshops, demonstrations and presentations.

Knowledge sharing

After a short introduction about TAISIG during the first part of the event, prof.dr.ir Pieter Spronck presented his knowledge about AI in the past, in the present and his expectations for AI in the future. This was complemented by prof.dr. Esther Keymolen, who spoke about safeguarding public values and rights in the development of (semi)automated processes such as AI. This not only covered the technological field of AI, but legal, ethical and societal aspects were also discussed.

Demonstrations

After the knowledge sharing in the first part, there was plenty of opportunity for visitors to walk around and discover AI applications up close during various demonstrations. These were presented by experts in a variety of focus areas. BrainihacksJos Prinsen and Caterina Ceccato gave visitors a glimpse of their project FOCUS. Prof.dr. Ton Wilthagen and Linda Parasiz informed visitors about the implementation of AI in primary education. Mirjam de Haas demonstrated how a robot teaches children a foreign language within the project L2TOR. On behalf of IVY Works, Derk Spronk and Willemijn van Oort showed how game-based assessments can be used for recruitment purposes and talent development within organizations.

Workshops

During the event, 4 workshops were given, all in different fields. Sharon Ong gave an interesting lecture on how AI is used in healthcare. Erdinç Saçan informed attendees about the increasing role of AI in our media landscape. JADSGiuseppe Cascavilla and Daniel de Pascale presented on the opportunities and risks of AI in the security domain. And Patricia Prüfer from CenterData discussed how AI is applied to the labour market.

Acknowledgements Emile Aarts

The afternoon was concluded by prof.dr.ir Boudewijn Haverkort with a word of thanks to TAISIG chairman prof.dr. Emile Aarts, who will handing over the baton to prof.dr.ir Pieter Spronck. The afternoon ended with networking drinks for all attendees, where people exchanged thoughts and insights on all the newly gathered information. Are you curious about the pictures of the event?
