TiCC Colloquium: Jochen Peter

What: Emerging communication technologies and young people: Theory, results, speculation
Where: WZ 206
When: Wednesday, 16 May 2018, 12:45 - 13:45 hours

In the past twenty years, young people have been at the forefront of using new communication technologies. Public debates, however, have often reduced young people's use of these technologies to either overly positive or excessively negative stories. This talk explains, in its first part, why young people have been so massively attracted to new communication technologies – and why this has been nearly inevitable. In the second part, nuanced empirical results will be presented about one of the most contested areas when it comes to new communication technologies, that is, the consequences of Internet pornography on adolescents' socio-sexual development. In the final part of the talk, an important emerging communication technology – social robots – will be discussed, along with some hypotheses about social robots' potential role in the lives of young people.
