TiCC Colloquium: Michael Erard

What: First words and last words
Where: Blackbox
When: Wednesday, 7 November 2018, 12:45 - 13:45 hours

We have a rich picture of the beginnings of language, thanks to decades of scientific research with children, infants, and even babies in the womb. Yet one would be surprised by how little the scholarly literature in fields like applied linguistics contains about how dying people communicate and language behavior at the very end of life. In this talk I will  explore the asymmetries of cultural and scientific attention paid to first and last words and begin to sketch a linguistics of the end of life, its potential theoretical contributions, its practical applications, and its ethical dimensions.
