SHARE network

Supported Housing Accomodations and Residents Europe (SHARE) is a European network dedicated to promoting high-quality research into the design and delivery of mental health supported housing services. Established in 2019 by Kwintes, UCL and Tranzo, Tilburg University, SHARE is comprised of researchers, academics, clinicians and practitioners who have an interest in supported housing research. Our goal is to enhance the evidence-base and quality of supported housing services, and promote innovations in the field. In this way, we aim to contribute to the personal and social recovery, and inclusion of persons with enduring mental illness.

As a group, we aim to:

  • Share research findings;
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration (research projects, papers and conferences);
  • Share relevant funding opportunities; and
  • Consider innovative ‘best practice’ examples.

What is supported housing?

Although definitions vary, the term ‘supported housing’ generally refers to any service that provides housing and support to mental health service-users living in the community. They can range from highly supported settings, with staff onsite 24-hours per day, through to services where visiting staff provide low-intensity, occasional support to people living in their own homes. Staff aim to assist service-users to develop or regain practical living skills, improve social functioning and promote recovery and independence. Supported housing services are often provided as part of a broader mental health ‘care pathway’, where people are supported to move from hospital and inpatient settings through to independent living, as their skills and confidence improve.

What we do

SHARE meets online twice a year, where members are invited to present their research and explore opportunities for collaboration.

SHARE members meet at the bi-annual ENMESH conference and prepare symposia together.

SHARE members are welcome to suggest and organize future site visits.

SHARE is open to proposals regarding future events and activities, and welcome any additional suggestions. Members are also encouraged to propose agenda items for future meetings.

Co-ordination of SHARE

Currently, SHARE is organized by:

Dr. Diana Roeg

Diana is head of research at Kwintes (organization for supported housing), and senior researcher at the collaborative centers Mental Health Care and Addiction of Tranzo, Tilburg University. Before, she worked as senior researcher at the mental health care organization GGzE for eight years. Trained as health scientist and mental health services researcher, Diana has worked in mental health recovery and participation research for over 20 years now. Her research interests include innovation in (public) mental health care. Her research includes projects on engagement, and destigmatizing of socially marginalized persons and persons with enduring mental illness. Her research further focuses on improving service provision in community mental health care to enhance the social and personal recovery in persons with mental illness and psychosocial problems.

Dr. Peter McPherson

Trained as a clinical psychologist, Peter has worked in mental health research since 2012. His research interests include quality improvement in supported accommodation, the evaluation of complex social interventions, and personal/social recovery in people with severe and enduring mental illness. He is currently completing a PhD at the Division of Psychiatry at UCL, where his doctoral project aims to develop and evaluate an evidence-based, recovery-focused training intervention for staff working in UK supported housing services. He is funded through the UCL Graduate Research Scholarship (GRS), and the UCL Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS).

Can I get involved?
