Five researchers are challenged to explain a problem or fact in a clarifying, creative, and entertaining way. You can decide who wins!

Every presenter gets eight minutes to present their current research and win the hearts of the audience. You can vote for the one that you find the most captivating. Presented by Richard Engelfriet, and featuring PhD candidates from the different Schools of our university: Evy van Weelden (TSHD), Maria Shaidrova (TLS), Huub Ruel (TST), Marijn Eversdijk (TSB) en Sietse Oostra (TiSEM).

  • Evy van Weelden

    Evy van Weelden

    PhD Candidate Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences

    Evy van Weelden, is a third year PhD candidate at Tilburg University's Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) department. Before this, she completed a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Neuroscience & Cognition at Utrecht University. During the Science Slam, Evy will talk about the use of neurotechnology in aviation. For example, it can be used to optimize Virtual Reality flight training through so-called “Brain-Computer Interface”: a system that tracks a user’s mental state to which the flight simulation adapts.

  • Sietse Oostra

    Sietse Oostra

    PhD Candidate Tilburg School of Economics and Management

    Sietse is PhD candidate at TiSEM's Accountancy Department since September 2022. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Tilburg University, as part of which he completed a six-months exchange program in Melbourne, Australia and a research master at Tilburg University, specializing in accounting. During the science slam, Sietse will be discuss the drawbacks of transparency and information dissemination. Is more information always better? Should we pursue maximal transparency? Or could all this backfire?

  • Marijn Eversdijk

    Marijn Eversdijk

    PhD Candidate Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

    Marijn is a PhD candidate at the department of Medical and Clinical Psychology Tilburg. Previously, he obtained a Research Master on Behavioral Science at Radboud University and a Master on Clinical Psychology at Tilburg University. He aims to understand and improve society by focusing on the ethical implementations of new technology, which relates to his current PhD research in which he focusses on the ethical and psychosocial challenges with smartwatch-based cardiac monitoring. During his pitch, Marijn will talk about the identification of these challenges and how we aim to solve them by integrating stakeholders in the balancing between saving lives and 'Big Brother' surveillance. 

  • Huub Ruel

    Huub Ruel

    PhD Candidate at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology

    Huub Ruel holds a Phd in Business Administration at the University of Twente (2001). Later in life, he obtained his Master’s degree in Christianity and Society at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology. In 2021 he started a PhD at the same department. Huub currently works at the University College Twente (University of Twente). His talk will focus on multinational corporations as powerful actors in our day-to-day lives and why we must request them to operate in a responsible way. Huub will argue that he Catholic Church and Catholic Social Teaching, the Church’ teaching applied to societal and economic issues, may be surprisingly relevant for today’s global economy and the challenges it is facing.

  • Maria Shaidrova

    Maria Shaidrova

    PhD Candidate Tilburg Law School

    Maria Shaidrova is a Research Talent Grant recipient of the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. on migration from Nigeria to the European Union at Tilburg University. Her areas of expertise are high-risk migration, ethnicity construction, representation and victimization of migrants, public administration, and trafficking in human beings. While writing about representation and agency of migrants from West Africa, through the lens of the metaphor of a theatrical play, Maria suddenly found herself in the situation where up to 90 000 migrants from her home country Ukraine crossed the Dutch border seeking for shelter. Maria started playing a key role in the play she was writing about. During her talk, she will reflect on how this (re)shaped her as a person and a scholar.
