Bio

Ernst Hirsch Ballin (1950) is affiliated to the university as a distinguished university professor and held – with exception of his years in government – since 1981 a chair for Public Law at the Law School of Tilburg University. As chair for human rights law at the University of Amsterdam he is also the president of the T.M.C. Asser Institute for International and European Law, based in The Hague. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Advisory Council for International Affairs. His academic work was interrupted when he served as Ministerof Justice (1989-1994 and 2006-2010) and Minister of Interior of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. From 2000-2006 he was a member of the Council of State and since 2003 the chair of the Council’s administrative jurisdiction division.
