Ernst Hirsch Ballin (1950) is affiliated to the university as a distinguished university professor and held – with exception of his years in government – since 1981 a chair for Public Law at the Law School of Tilburg University. Since October 2020, he is the vice dean for research of Tilburg Law School. Until becoming emeritus professor as of November 2020, he was part-time chair of Human Rights Law at the University of Amsterdam and President of the Asser Institute for International and European Law. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Advisory Council for International Affairs. His academic work was interrupted when he served as Minister of Justice (1989-1994 and 2006-2010) and Minister of Interior of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (2010). From 2000-2006 he was a member of the Council of State and since 2003 the chair of the Council’s administrative jurisdiction division.
