Bio

Gerhard van der Schyff lectures on and conducts research in constitutional law and fundamental rights from a comparative and European perspective. In 2015 he held a Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers at the Chair of Professor Christian Calliess at the Free University in Berlin, working on the topic of constitutional identity. In 2008 he spent research periods at the British Institute for International and Comparative Law in London, and at the Faculty of Law at Cambridge University. During this time he conducted research towards his Veni project, awarded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), concerning the judicial review of legislation in comparative perspective. Gerhard's research has been cited or referred to in various (minority) judgments, including in cases before the European Court of Human Rights, the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and the Supreme Court of Canada.
