Bio

I teach Christian Spirituality at Tilburg University, School of Catholic Theology, Franciscan Study Center. I hold a Ph.D. (2007) in Medieval History from Radboud University Nijmegen and a Ph.D. and S.T.D. (2019) in Medieval Theology from KU Leuven. I published four books, four volumes, and multiple translations in Dutch. My English publications include Franciscan Virtue: Spiritual Growth and the Virtues in Franciscan Literature and Instruction of the Thirteenth Century (Leiden 2012) and the edited volumes The Carthusians in the Low Countries: Studies in Monastic History and Heritage (Louvain 2014), A Companion to Medieval Rules and Customaries (Leiden 2020) and Moral Conversion in Scripture, Self and Society (Berlin 2024). I am Chairman of the International Society for the Study of Medieval Theology (www.medievaltheology.org) and General Editor of Franciscan Studies and Franciscanconnections.com.

Expertise

My research concerns virtue and environmental ethics, character building, Christian moral and spiritual traditions, Franciscan history and spirituality, and religious orders and religious life.

My current research projects are Character Building in the Theological Curriculum, Virtual Virtuosity: Building Character Through Practical Wisdom in a Digital World, and Transitus: A Theology of Discontinuity, Death, and Completion.

I am research coordinator in Tilburg School of Catholic Theology's "Texts in Contexts" Department.
