Dr. Pauline Jacobs (1982) works as an an Associate Professor in Criminal (Procedure) Law at Tilburg University. She obtained an LL.M. in Criminal and Private Law from Tilburg University, where she also completed the Research Master in Law (M.Phil). Previously , she worked as a teacher at the Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology at Leiden University and an Assistant Professor in criminal law and criminal procedure at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology of Utrecht University.
Pauline Jacobs' main research interest concerns criminal (procedure) law and human rights, with a special focus on penitentiary law, the field of law that focuses on the execution of criminal sanctions and measures.
Areas of expertise include pre-trial detention, the legal position of prisoners, the life-term prison sentence, hunger strike in prison, the complaints and appeal procedure, transgender prisoners and the international human rights norms for prisons.
Furthermore, she is a member of the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (Raad voor Strafrechtstoepassing en Jeugdbescherming), a member of the board of the Association for Penitentiary Law and Penology ('Vereniging voor Penitentiair Recht en Penologie'), a member of the editorial board of 'Nederlands Tijdschrift voor de Mensenrechten' (the leading Dutch Human Rights Review) and a member of the expert pool of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
Pauline Jacobs teaches the courses 'Strafrechtelijk sanctierecht' en 'Verdiepend strafrecht' in the master program in law. She also supervises students writing their master thesis in the field of criminal (procedure) law and penitentiary law.
Pauline also provides postgraduate education on criminal (procedure) law and penitentiary law to judges, lawyers and other professionals.
She is the coordinator of the profile Criminal law within the master's program Rechtsgeleerdheid (Dutch Law) and a member of the Examination Board of Tilburg Law School.
Pauline Jacobs welcomes research proposals on penitentiairy law of potential PhD-students.
Current research includes a research on transgender prisoners, in which legal research methods are combined with empirical research methods. More information on this project can be found here.
