Methods to pay your tuition and/or weighted fees at Tilburg University

There are several methods to pay your tuition or weighted fees at Tilburg University.

Digital authorization via Studielink

By confirming this digital authorization, you grant permission to Tilburg University to direct debit the tuition or weighted fees. Please follow the 'step-by-step Instruction – Digital (payment) authorisation'.

Please note: You can only pay tuition or weighted fees with digital authorization if you have a bank account in a country in the SEPA area. The SEPA countries are listed here. If someone else (e.g. your father/mother) pays, they must also have a SEPA bank account. If you do not meet the requirements, please check the online 'payment wizard' and follow the new outcome.

Payment via Digital Authorization in steps

Step 1

  • Log in to your Studielink account and go to ‘My To Do List’.
  • Click ‘Enter payment details’. This is only possible after you have submitted a(n re-)enrollment application at Tilburg University. Re-enrollment in Studielink is possible as of mid-June.

  • Click on ‘Next question’.

A)  When you will pay yourself:
Step 6

  • Indicate whether you want to pay in installments (‘Yes’) or not (‘No’).
  • Click on ‘Next question’.

Step 7

  • Enter your name (as written on your bank card) and your IBAN code. Once completely entered, click on ‘Confirm’

Please note: You have now entered your payment details, but the digital authorization will have to be saved first in the next step.

  • Click on ‘Next question’.

Step 8

Once Tilburg University has determined your tuition or weighted fees, you (the student) will receive an e-mail at the e-mail address that was entered in Studielink. Pre-Master's students who re-enroll in the same Pre-Master's program will not be able to confirm the digital authorization before September 1.
  • This e-mail will contain instructions on how to arrange the payment and a link to the web page where the other person who will pay the tuition or weighted fees can confirm the digital authorization. Forward this e-mail to this person immediately and ask them to confirm the authorization as soon as possible. The person making the payment will need a SEPA bank account for this step. You will also find this message with instructions in the ‘My messages’ tab in your Studielink account.
  • Until the digital direct debit authorization has been confirmed, you will have a ‘Get digital authorisation confirmed’ action item in your To Do list. When you click this, you, you can resend the email with the instructions to the other person who will pay for you. Once this other person has confirmed the digital authorization, this action will disappear from your ToDo list.

Step 7

  • The other person that will pay the tuition fees clicks on the payment link in the email. Next, this person should enter their account holder’s details and click on ‘Next question’.

Step 8

  • The payer is asked if they want to receive a copy of the email about the issue of the authorization. If ‘YES’ is chosen, an email address should be filled in. Subsequently, click on ‘Next question’.

Step 9

  • The payer should fill in their address details. Subsequently, click on ‘Next question’.

Step 10

  • The payer must state whether or not they want to pay in installments. Subsequently, click on ‘Next question’.

Step 11

  • An overview of the entered details is shown where the payer has to tick the box ‘I hereby state…’ and press ‘Save’.

The digital authorization is now confirmed. You will receive a confirmation email. In case the issue of the authorization was unsuccessful you will also receive an e-mail about this.

If the payer indicated that he/she wants to receive a copy of the email about the issue of the authorization he/she will receive a confirmation copy of the digital authorization details. If you have not received this message within 2 working days after confirming in Studielink, please contact the Student Desk.

One-off transfer or payment in installments

One-off transfer (via digital authorization)

By choosing not to pay in installments via a digital authorization, you authorize Tilburg University to direct debit the tuition or weighted fees in full in one single installment. Tilburg University does not charge any fees for the administrative expenses for a one-off transfer. The payment will take place on the first (upcoming) installment date (see overview of installment dates below).

Please note: Once you have chosen this payment method, you cannot change it. Paying all at once (a ‘one-off transfer’) means that you have to pay for the entire academic year (12 months from September 1 until August 31). Even if you deregister halfway through the year, for example because you graduate in January. The tuition fees for the remaining months are only refunded after you deregister. If you don't want to pay the full tuition fee for the whole academic year in advance, choose to pay in installments.

If you  want to change your payment method into payment in installments, you can only do this before September. Contact the Student Desk to do this.

Payment in installments (via digital authorization)

Payment in installments is only possible via digital authorization. If you start your program in September, you can pay the tuition or weighted fees in 8 installments. Tilburg University will charge a fee of € 24 for the administrative expenses for payment in installments. These administrative expenses will be added to the first installment.

Please note: if you start your program after September, your tuition or weighted fees for the academic year will be determined based on your starting date. If you choose to pay in installments, the amount of each installment will be calculated according to this rate. Tilburg University has standard direct debit dates from September until May. Payments will be withdrawn from your bank account by Tilburg University according to these standard direct debit dates. After your digital authorization has been received and processed, the total amount of your tuition or weighted fees will be divided over the remaining number of installments (direct debit dates).

When your digital authorization is received and processed before September 15, your tuition or weighted fee due will be divided over the eight installment dates shown below. If the authorization is not received and processed on time, there are 7 installment dates left, of which October 25, 2022, would be the first. Thus your tuition or weighted fee due will be divided over the seven installment dates, of which October 25 will be the first installment.

Example:

  • If you start on September 1, the determined total amount of tuition due could be €14,900. The amount of each installment will be €1862.50 whilst the first installment amount will be €1,886.50 (including €24 administration costs).
  • If your digital authorization is not received and processed on time for the September installment, the next installment date is October 25. Since seven installments are left, €2,128.57 (=14,900/7) will be withdrawn on each of the seven remaining installment dates. On October 25, €2,152.57 (including €24 administration costs) will be withdrawn.
  • If you start on February 1, and your determined total amount of tuition due is € 8,691.67 then the amount of each installment will be €2,172.92 (=8,691.67/4) (February, March, April and May). The February installment will be increased with the €24 administrative costs.

Depending on the date Tilburg University has received and processed your digital authorization, the direct debit will take place on the following dates.

For the academic year 2022-2023 (start September)

  • September 26, 2022
  • October 25, 2022
  • November 25, 2022
  • January 25, 2023
  • February 27, 2023
  • March 27, 2023
  • April 25, 2023
  • May 25, 2023

If you start your program in February, it is be possible to pay your tuition or weighted fees in  4 installments. Tilburg University will charge a fee of € 24 for the administrative expenses for payment in installments. These administrative expenses will be added to the first installment.

If you start your program in March or later, it will not be possible to pay your tuition or weighted fees in installments.

Proof of tuition fee payment (BBC)

If you are registered at another accredited Dutch WO or HBO institution for higher education and if you have paid the statutory tuition fee there, you may be exempted from payment of tuition at Tilburg University if you also pay the statutory tuition fee at Tilburg University.

Please note: this only concerns exemption for the statutory fee and not the institutional fee. Please apply at the other Dutch institution for a Proof of tuition fee payment (in Dutch: Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld, BBC).

Please indicate via Studielink that you wish to pay using a BBC (for Tilburg University this is possible from mid June onwards). Depending on whether the educational institution supports this, it may be possible to apply for and forward a digital copy of the BBC in Studielink. From mid June it will be possible to enter your  (BBC) payment details in Studielink, about which you will be informed once it is possible.

If the educational institution in question does not support this, you will need to apply for the BBC from the institution to which you paid tuition fees outside of Studielink. You should then forward the BBC to the educational institution where you wish to submit your BBC as proof of payment.

Deposit a original BBC in the mailbox at the entrance to the Student Desk (Route 14, A301).

If you would like to apply for a Proof of tuition fee payment from Tilburg University to enroll at another university, please fill out the online request form.

Frequently Asked Questions on Payment of Tuition Fees

Can I apply for a government loan?

As an EU or EEA student, you have the opportunity to apply for a loan from the Dutch government to cover the tuition fees. If you meet specific requirements, you can also apply for a supplementary grant.

What happens if there are tuition fees arrears?

If the university can not direct debit the installment (or full amount due) from the provided bank account or the direct debit has been reversed by the bank account holder a reminder e-mail requesting payment of the outstanding tuition or weighted fees will be sent via AcceptEmail.

You will have to transfer the due amount yourself,  for which you can use the enclosed link in the AcceptEmail. The university can not execute the direct debit again (once it has been reversed).

If the student fails to make full payment of the tuition or weighted fees before the deadline of this 1st AccepEmail reminder expires, the corresponding Tilburg University network account will be blocked.

How to pay the tuition fees / weighted fees in the future?

If the student fails to make full payment of the tuition or weighted fees due before the deadline of this reminder expires, the Head of Student Administration will terminate the student’s registration as of the second month following on the reminder. All tuition or weighted fees owed will remain due through the month you are deregistered.

Consequently, payment by direct debit will no longer be possible for you. This regulation is stated in Article 7.2 of the Registration and Tuition Fee Regulations.

You need to transfer the total tuition / weighted fees in full by personal remittance. Please use the financial details under “Personal Remittance” which you can find on this webpage. If you fall into arrears and fail to meet the payment deadline mentioned in the reminder, additional collection costs (incl. VAT) will be charged on top of the tuition or weighted fees owed. If you do not pay this total amount, all these additional costs will be added to your outstanding debt to Tilburg University and a debt collector will be engaged.

Check the information in the event of Problems paying tuition / weighted fees.

I am starting a master program in February. What is my tuition fee?

If you start a master's program in February, you pay 7/12 of the tuition fee that applies to you (statutory or institutional tuition fee).

If you continue your program in September, you pay the full tuition fee. Upon termination of the study program (eg after graduation), the tuition fee will be recalculated and, if necessary, overpaid tuition fee will be refunded.

Examples:

You will start in February 2023 with the master's degree in Law and Technology and you are entitled to the statutory fee. In that case, you pay 7/12 * 2,209 = 1,288.58 euros for the 2022-2023 academic year. For the 2023-2024 academic year your tuition fees will be determined in due time.

You start in February 2023 with the master's degree in Law and Technology and you pay the institutional fee. In that case, you pay 7/12 * 14,900 = 8,691.67 euros for the 2022-2023 academic year. For the 2023-2024 academic year your tuition fees will be determined in due time.

The same goes for the institutional fee (count €2209).

Why can I no longer pay my tuition fees in installments if I start the master's in February?

This applies to masters that start in February, following premasters of 30 ec that start in September:

If you have paid the weighted fee for your premaster in one lump sum in September, you will automatically also pay the tuition fee for the master (February to August) in one lump sum.

If you don't want to or can't, you have to indicate already in August that you also pay the premaster weighted fee in installments. But then you also pay the remaining installments for the weighted fee in February through May, while the premaster has already been completed.
