Start building up a professional network during your studies at Tilburg University

How do I network?

A lot of people find a job or internship through networking. But what is networking, why is it important, and how can you do it effectively?

Six degrees of separation

The six degrees of separation theory states that all people are six or fewer social connections away from each other. This shows that networking is a great way to present yourself. It can open doors and eventually help you to find a job or internship.

Why networking is so important?

Ask questions

Do not ask for a job straight away but ask questions to get more information and receive tips and advice, for example at career events or via LinkedIn, or from alumni and recruiters.

Do not forget your personal network: your fellow students, family, and friends. They are just as important as your professional network!

Networking through LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great platform to start networking. First, make sure you create a strong LinkedIn profile that expresses your personality.

Then, start expanding your network.

  1. Connect with recruiters and show them your interest.
  2. Research alumni and see what their paths were. Connect with alumni who have an interesting profile and ask for tips and advice. You can easily search for alumni via the Tilburg University LinkedIn page.
  3. And follow interesting companies and groups.

If you send a connection request, make sure it contains why you reach out, what you are looking for and end with a clear call for action. Make it short with the right tone of voice. A LinkedIn connection request has a maximum of 300 characters, so be brief!

If your connection request is accepted, you can start a conversation through LinkedIn.

Last but maybe most important: networking is for everybody. Find your own way! It is okay if it is a little bit out of your comfort zone, but do not stretch too far. Just practice and do it in a way that suits you.
