Denise about going on exchange

Published: 29th September 2021 Last updated: 16th January 2023

Our student Denise immediately knew she wanted to go on exchange outside of Europe. She went for one semester to Sydney in 2019. “I enjoyed experiencing university life in another country, but all the other aspects of living abroad for six months were great! The activities I joined and the friends I made, who I still have contact with. It’s really the social experience which was the most memorable for me.” Denise admits that you are on your own at first. “But this also pushes you to learn to take care of yourself.”

To make sure she was prepared to go abroad, she went to several information sessions; first to orientate and then to prepare for Sydney in particular. “There is a lot you need to know before you can go on exchange. So, during these events, I made sure I paid attention. I learned about the basics; financing, accommodation, etc. But also came in contact with students who already went abroad and came to these events to tell us about their experience. This was so helpful.” Because of their enthusiastic stories, Denise felt like: I also want to experience that!

And during the Study Abroad Fair on October 5, 2021, Denise took up the baton. “I want to convince the students who hesitate to lose their doubts and just go for it. For me, it was such a once-in-a-life-time opportunity, so I hope I can help them make their choice.”
