Virtual Private Network (VPN)

VPN (Virtual Privat Network) is used to provide internet access to applications and services that cannot be accessed if you are not logged into the wired university network.

Step 1: Download the Global Protect VPN client

Before you can install a VPN connection, you must download the VPN client (GlobalProtect).

Tilburg University's VPN client makes an authenticated connection to the Tilburg University network through Tilburg University's VPN server based on your username and password.

Step 2: Install the VPN client

Once you have downloaded the Global Protect VPN client, you can then install it. Learn more about installing the VPN client in the SelfService Portal IT.

VPN is enforced

If a VPN connection is required, it will be enforced. If there is no VPN connection, the application or service will notify you that access is not possible. The advice is then to set up the VPN and see if access is possible.

For which services do students need a VPN connection?

If you do not have a wired connection to the campus network, you need a VPN connection for:

  • Access to the library databases of the publishers “Beck” and “Peeters”.

For which services do employees need a VPN connection?

If you do not have a wired connection to the campus network, you need a VPN connection for:

  • Accessing some business applications from a university PC/laptop.
  • Access M:- and O:-drive from university PC/laptop.
  • Access to the library databases of the publishers “Beck” and “Peeters”.

Only for university network access

The VPN connection only provides a secure connection between your PC/laptop and the university network for those applications/services/library databases that cannot be reached without a VPN connection. It is not a general secure connection between your PC/laptop and the internet or other applications and services.

Logging into your VPN (GlobalProtect) only accessible via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Please note that you must verify the login in your Microsoft Authenticator app. Note: VPN (GlobalProtect) does not show a message or pop-up (on your PC/laptop) that you must approve the login. However, verififcation is required. You need the Microsoft Authenticator app every time you log in to your VPN. After submitting a valid username/password combination, an approval message will immediately appear in the Authenticator app.

For this application, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is used

This is an additional measure to protect data more effectively.

  • Log in with your password.
  • Confirm the login in your Microsoft Authenticator App.
