Exchange Scholarships

If you are selected for an exchange through Tilburg University you may be eligible for a scholarship. Check the overview of all available scholarships below for prospective exchange students.

Application process for exchange scholarships

Some scholarships require you to carry out several steps in order to apply for the scholarship. You can find all instructions you need on this page. Scholarships that require action from you are:

  • Erasmus+ Top-Up Grant for students with financial need
  • Supplementary Scholarship Erasmus+
  • Erasmus+ (KA171 project)
  • Grotius
  • Erasmus+ Green Travel Grant

In contrast, the below scholarships do not have a specific application procedure and you do not need to undertake any steps until you have been contacted first by the Study Abroad & Exchange Team:

Erasmus plus

Exchanges within the EU and associated third countries (North Macedonia, Serbia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey)

Erasmus+ (KA 131 Project)

Erasmus+ is the EU program for Education, Training, Youth and Sport. Among other things, Erasmus+ aims to promote international student mobility by offering scholarships for study.

If you are selected for an exchange program within Europe, you may receive an Erasmus+ Grant for your stay abroad.

Period

  • > 2 months up to a maximum of 12 months; the actual duration will be determined by available funding

Amount

  • The level of the Erasmus+ grant changes every year and the amount per month depends on the country where you are going to study. The minimum amount is €270, the maximum amount is €390 per month. 
  • Please note: it is possible that the Erasmus+ grant will not cover all your expenses during your mobility period, but is a contribution towards your costs.  If you need further financial assistance because of your personal circumstances, please see below for further information or contact our Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator via erasmusplus@tilburguniversity.edu.

Erasmus+ Top-Up grant for students with fewer opportunities (financial/medical conditon)

As part of an initiative of the European Commission to increase participation of underrepresented groups in Erasmus+, Tilburg University is offering additional Erasmus+ funding to students with less income who have never studied abroad before. Please note that this funding is only available to students going to European Erasmus+ countries and not Erasmus+ KA171 destinations.

Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible if you fulfill at least one of the following criteria:

  • you experience economic barriers and therefore receive (or have received at any time in the last two years) some supplementary grant (i.e. aanvullende beurs) from DUO, and/or;
  • you have a disability or a diagnosed (chronic) medical condition which may influence and complicate travel and/or studying abroad.

On top of these criteria, the following needs to be fulfilled to receive the Erasmus+ grant as well as the top up:

  • you are studying abroad for the first time
  • you are selected to participate in an Erasmus+ exchange in Europe
  • you complete your Erasmus+ exchange with a minimum of 24 ECTS and meet the requirements for an Erasmus+ mobility

Period

  • Students will receive the top-up in combination with the Erasmus+ scholarship for the length of the exchange

Amount

Students will receive around € 250 per month in addition to an Erasmus+ KA131 scholarship (amount depending on the destination).

Application Procedure

  • Collect supporting documents, like:
    • A recent doctor's statement  (if applicable; in Dutch or English). The doctor does not have to specify the disability or a diagnosed (chronic) medical condition. 
    • Documents DUO grant

Submit this Top-up grant application webform before the start of the mobility.

Selection Procedure

Applicants will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible.

Erasmus+ Inclusion Support

The Dutch National Agency for Erasmus+ (Nuffic) can provide additional financial support for students and staff with a disability and/or special needs.

The additional financial support from Erasmus+ is meant to cover costs that cannot be funded from other sources like the regular Erasmus+ grant (and the regular Top-up grant for students with fewer opportunities). Those additional costs can consist of accessible accommodation, (medical) guidance and specific mobility and disability equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You have a disability and need extra facilities to be able to carry out your studies.

Amount and Period

  • The maximum students can receive is the total amount of extra costs incurred by the disability/special need and only for the length of the exchange.

Application and selection procedure

  • Collect supporting documents, like:
    • A self-written description of your personal situation and the extra facilities that you need during your Erasmus+ period, such as housing, guidance and transport.
    • A recent doctor's statement  (in Dutch or English) The doctor does not have to specify the disability or a diagnosed (chronic) medical condition. 
    • A detailed budget of the expenses required for the extra facilities mentioned above, with the exception of the expenses covered by other sources of funding (like the regular Erasmus+ grant). 
  • Submit Inclusion Support webform at least 2,5 months before the start of your mobility 
  • Tilburg University will assess your application and submits the application to Nuffic

Supplementary Scholarship Erasmus+

* Please note that the information below is for exchanges in the 2023-2024 academic year. It is not yet known if the Supplementary Scholarship will be available for exchanges in the 2024-25 academic year. *

As part of our commitment to making Erasmus+ exchange possible for all students, Tilburg University is offering four scholarships for students with limited financial resources for an Erasmus+ exchange. Please note that this funding is only available to students going to European Erasmus+ countries and not Erasmus+ KA171 destinations.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify, students must:

  • Provide proof that they qualify for the maximum supplementary scholarship from DUO (maximaal aanvullende beurs).
  • Meet all of the requirements for an Erasmus+ exchange, or have already been selected for an Erasmus+ exchange starting in Fall 2023 only.
  • Never have previously studied abroad.
  • Complete all of the courses/ECTS in the learning agreement, while on exchange.

Period

  • Students will receive a one-time payment for their exchange period.

Amount

Students will receive € 2,500 in addition to an Erasmus+ scholarship (amount depending on the destination).

Application Procedure

Students should apply via e-mail to erasmusplus@tilburguniversity.edu by May 14, 2023. Applicants must provide the following:

  • Name, ANR, student number, current study program.
  • An official transcript of records from the student desk.
  • Proof from DUO that s/he has qualified for the maximum supplementary scholarship from DUO for the six months prior to the scholarship deadline.
  • A one-page motivation letter explaining his/her reasons for studying abroad and why s/he should be selected for a supplementary scholarship.

Selection Procedure

Students will be selected on the basis of academic performance. In the case of equal academic performance, motivation will be considered.

All students will be informed of the outcome before the deadline for applying for study abroad.

Erasmus+ Green Travel Grant

From Spring 2024 onwards, a Green Travel Grant will be available for students who travel to their exchange destination via a sustainable mode of transport. Sustainable modes of transport include train, bus, and carpooling.  Air travel is generally considered not to be a green means of transport.  You will receive the Green Travel Grant in addition to the basic Erasmus+ KA131 grant. 

Amount

Students will receive a one-time payment of € 50, plus up to a maximum of four days of extra individual support, to account for additional travel days caused by longer travel times.

Eligibility criteria

In order to qualify, the following criteria must be met:

  • Students must have been selected for an exchange in an Erasmus+ KA131 program country for the Spring 2024 semester or a future semester.
  • Students must travel to their exchange destination by train, bus, boat, bicycle or carpooling

Application Procedure (from Spring 2024 onwards)

  1. In your workflow in Mobility Online indicate that you want to claim Green travel top-up (in the Pre-departure - Erasmus+ grant section of your workflow) 
  2. Download the Declaration of Honour
  3. Upload the signed Declaration of Honour

Exchanges outside the EU and associated third countries

Erasmus+ (KA171 Project)

A select number of scholarships are available for mobility to Erasmus+ partner institutions outside of the Erasmus+ program area.  Below you will find a list of the available scholarships for academic year 2023-2024. The number of available spots (in brackets) and the scholarship amount available is indicated with each destination.

Partner institutions:

United States:

  1. Roosevelt University, Chicago (2) – €820 travel grant, €3,500 individual support (150 days)

Eligibility requirements:

  • Your exchange period will be during the fall or spring semester 2023/2024 at the above institution
  • You are registered as a student for a full-time program at Tilburg University
  • You will study a minimum of 30 ECTS at the partner institutions
  • You will spend a minimum of 2 months physically present in the host destination, i.e. the scholarship cannot be used for online exchanges.

Application procedure:

Students who would like to apply for one of the KA171 scholarships need to:

  1. apply for the destination in Mobility Online 
  2. send a motivation letter (1 page) to studyabroad@tilburguniversity.edu

Erasmus+ encourages the participation of students from disadvantaged groups.  Students are encouraged to indicate if personal circumstances have influenced their study progress/results and/or make it difficult for them to study abroad as this will be taken into consideration when evaluating the above-mentioned criteria.

Students with a disability may also be eligible for additional funding under Erasmus+.  Students should contact erasmusplus@tilburguniversity.edu, if they have questions regarding this.

Selection procedure:

Students will be selected based on their grades and motivation (equally).  Eventual special circumstances will be taken into consideration when evaluating the student’s motivation.

NL Scholarship

The NL Scholarship is a joint initiative between the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch universities to stimulate the mobility of talented students, both to and from the Netherlands, in order to support and strengthen our international classroom.  Tilburg University is proud to be part of this initiative. For the academic year 2024-2025 we have 45 NL Scholarships available.

For whom?

The NL Scholarship is offered to students registered at Tilburg University who have been selected to study outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Selection criteria 2024-2025

In order to be considered for an NL Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You have applied for an exchange before one of the first three application deadlines (November, February or March).
    • The deadline for applying is May 1, 2024. So when you apply for an exchange at the July or September deadline, you are not eligible for the NL Scholarship.
  • You are registered as a student for a full-time program at Tilburg University.
  • Your exchange period will be minimum 7 weeks
  • Your exchange will take place in a country outside the EEA.
  • You must have an average study result of at least 7 (out of 10) on May 1, 2024.
    • You are responsible for checking that your GPA has been correctly entered into Osiris. If it is not correct, you must ensure that it is corrected in Osiris before the application deadline.  Changes in the GPA made after the application deadline will not be taken into account for the award of the NL Scholarships.
  • You are not eligible to receive an Erasmus+ Scholarship.
  • You have not received an NL Scholarship from any other university/institution before .
  • You must obtain a minimum of 10 ECTS while abroad.

Please note that, if applicable, the NL Scholarship replaces the Study Abroad Allowance (SAA).

Scholarship amount

In 2024-2025, students who are awarded an NL Scholarship will receive an amount of €2,500 for the entire exchange period. The Scholarship is intended as a contribution towards your study expenses during your exchange period abroad.

How to apply

If you are selected for an exchange in 2024-2025 and eligible to receive an NL Scholarship (see Selection Criteria above), you will be informed by the Study Abroad & Exchange Office about the straightforward application procedure (in April 2024). You do not need to do anything until the Study Abroad & Exchange Office contacts you. After the deadline, the Study Abroad & Exchange Office will award the available scholarships based on the selection criteria and the number of scholarships available per Tilburg University School.

Note: Please be aware that personal data of scholarship recipients will be shared for reporting purposes with Nuffic.

Study Abroad Allowance

The Study Abroad Allowance is offered by several Tilburg University Schools to provide a contribution towards extra costs of a study abroad period and encourage students to go on exchange.

For whom?

The Study Abroad Allowance applies to Tilburg University students who are going on an exchange outside the European Economic Area (EEA) as part of their studies and who are not eligible for any other grant. Students can only receive this grant once. Whether or not you can receive this grant depends on your Tilburg School and your destination.

Selection Criteria

  • In 2024/2025 the SAA is available to Tilburg students from the following Schools:

  • The SAA is not applicable to students of JADS
  • Your exchange period will be between three months (minimum) and 12 months (maximum).
  • Your exchange will take place in a country outside the EEA.
  • You are not eligible to receive an Erasmus+ Scholarship/Swiss-European Mobility Programme.
  • You will not receive other financial allowances such as grants or scholarships from any other institution or party.
  • You have not received a Study Abroad Allowance before.
  • You must obtain a minimum of 24 ECTS while abroad.

Amount

The amount of the Study Abroad Allowance is calculated each year and depends on each School’s budget. The scholarship provide students with €750. Students will receive €650 before departure and €100 upon return. If they meet the eligibility criteria listed above, students going on exchange outside of the European Economic Area will automatically receive this scholarship unless they have been awarded a Holland Scholarship.

Grotius scholarship for law

Grotius

The Grotius Scholarship is available for talented Tilburg Law School students who have at least one parent or two grandparents from one of the target countries.

The Grotius Scholarship is available for an exchange period to study or to do an internship in commercial legal practice. The Scholarship has a minimum value of €1,500 and a maximum value of €3,000.
