Study Abroad Study Plan - Humanities and Digital Sciences

Would you like to lend color to your Bachelor’s degree? Why not opt for studying a semester abroad! The Tilburg Schools of Humanities and Digital Sciences thinks it is important that all students are given this unique opportunity during their studies. Below you will find more information on how you can incorporate a Study Abroad experience in your program.

Most students opt for a study abroad experience in the Bachelor phase. However, there are also each year a few Master students who apply for an exchange. To enable you to include a study abroad experience into your study program without (too much) delay, the academic directors of all programs formulated the following arrangements.

BA or BSc Liberal Arts and Sciences

For the Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor Program, a minor program consisting of 30 ECTS is compulsory. If you want to study abroad for this minor, you are expected to take at least 24 ECTS worth of courses abroad and complete one major LAS ‘distance’ course worth 6 ECTS during your exchange. When deciding what minor courses to choose, it is advisable to take into consideration what master you would like to take after graduation from your LAS bachelor program. The reason for this is that some Master programs have additional requirements. In some cases, you can use your minor program to meet these additional requirements during your bachelor program, enabling you to enroll for the Master program of your choice without any study delays. Should you need advice on your minor, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with the Educational Coordinator

BSc Communication and Information Sciences

Each student is expected to take 30 ECTS worth of minor courses. The courses can be obtained in Tilburg, at other Dutch universities, or abroad (or a mixture). Students may select any courses for their exchange, with the exception that language courses or more than 2 first year courses are not allowed. There should also be no overlap with courses in the CIS study program. You are expected to take at least 24 ECTS worth of courses abroad.

BSc CSAI: Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence

Each student is expected to take 30 ECTS worth of minor courses. These minor courses can be obtained in Tilburg, at other Dutch universities, or via an exchange abroad. Students may select any courses for their exchange, with the exception that language courses or more than 2 first year courses are not allowed. There should also be no overlap with courses in the CSAI study program.

If you decide to go on exchange,  you are expected to take at least 24 ECTS worth of courses at the host university. The department’s minor coordinator can advise you about possible course choices. The Board of Examiners determines whether the courses you select match the criteria.

BA Philosophy

Each student is expected to take 30 ECTS worth of minor courses. The courses can be obtained in Tilburg, at other Dutch universities, or abroad (or a mixture). You are expected to take at least 24 ECTS worth of courses abroad. If you take your courses abroad, you can go on exchange without a study delay in your second year of your Bachelor Program. This requires philosophy students to apply for an exchange in their first year of study. Special rules apply in this case. First year philosophy students are excluded from applying for the first deadline in November. They can apply for the second or third application deadline when they have obtained 30 ECTS. Or, they can apply for the fourth or fifth application deadline when they have obtained 54 ECTS.

BA Culture Studies

Each student is expected to take 30 ECTS worth of minor courses. The courses can be obtained in Tilburg, at other Dutch universities, or abroad (or a mixture). You are expected to take at least 24 ECTS worth of courses abroad.

Master programs

For the Master programs CIS and KCW: MCD has one elective that can be taken abroad.

The Master's program in Communication and Information Sciences offers scope for following one elective course (6 ECTS). An elective course may be completed with no more than one Master's course offered by a degree program accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. For any other choice, prior permission must be obtained from the Examination Board. No prior permission is given for more than one elective course. If more courses have been taken elsewhere―after successful completion―a request can be submitted to the Examination Board to list those units of study as 'extra courses' on the transcript of grades.

Research Master programs

Although an exchange semester is not embedded in the Research Master program, it is still possible for Research Master students to go on exchange. The Research Master in Linguistics and Communication Sciences offers flexibility in the sequence of the program, allowing students to minimize study delays with the help of good planning. If you are a Research Master student and you are interested in an exchange program, you are advised to first contact the study advisor (s.warmerdam@tilburgbuniversity.edu) since exchange courses do not automatically count towards your curriculum as elective courses.

Selecting courses at the Partner University

When looking for courses at the Partner University, there are a couple of rules to keep in mind:

  1. Each student is expected to take 30 ECTS worth of minor courses in the BSc programs. The courses can be obtained in Tilburg or abroad (or a mixture). You should obtain a minimum of 24 ECTS worth of courses whilst abroad. It does not matter whether you need the credits for your study program (e.g. minor program) at Tilburg University or whether the credits obtained abroad will be registered as “on top of” courses.
  2. You are expected to take courses that complement your study program in Tilburg. Compulsory courses that are part of your curriculum, courses that are similar to courses in your curriculum (overlapping courses), courses from previous programs, language courses and skill courses cannot be part of your exchange
  3. Courses need to be at the appropriate level. This means Bachelor students can only take courses at Bachelor level, and Master students can only take courses at Master level.
  4. Bachelor students are allowed to take first-year Bachelor courses with a maximum workload of 12 ECTS in total. If you wish to take more than 12 ECTS of first-year courses, you are required to provide a motivation explaining why it is necessary for your study plan. You can do so when you ask for a course approval after your selection by the Study Abroad & Exchange Office and during the pre-departure phase.

All courses you will take abroad will need to be approved by the TSHD Examination Board. This happens during the pre-departure phase, after you find out which host university you have been selected for. You can find the instructions for your course approval on our Courses at the partner university page, and in the pre-departure instructions in your Mobility Online workflow.
