Last month, Tilburg University students won the Brabathon, a hackathon competition for 60 students. In this hackathon students could experience what it’s like to work on innovation of the healthcare procedures of tomorrow. They had the opportunity to collaborate on a case with their peers and experts from Philips. Besides that, the teams got an interesting tour through the Customer Experience Center and participated in some demo’s. The challenge was to improve stroke treatment by decreasing time from disease to treatment. Congratulations to the winners Lewis, Isabelle, Chiara, Bianca, Agata and Kajetan!

Bianca says that she was able to find out so many new things about the healthcare industry, since as a business students you don’t necessarily tackle this kind of issues. “My team and I came up with a centralised system where all the information (i.e., patients’ CTs, blood tests, etc.) will be added, thus make the communication flow (i.e., doctors, paramedics, nurses, etc.) more efficient.” Lewis explains that the workflow is a major concern in stroke treatment due to several factors, for example the two-sided solution because of the lack of communication between hospitals and their stakeholders. He was able to expand his regular thinking patterns and aims to think outside of the box more often. Isabelle liked working in a team the most: “You start the day working in a team with people that you don't know. The culture in our team was so supportive. We made sure everyone had a voice, everyone could ask questions and everyone contributed.” Chiara adds that working together with an open mind and sharing our doubts and knowledge can enable to us find and suggest solutions even to multinationals such as Philips. She would advise other students to participate in this Brabathon. “I think it is a great opportunity where you can learn a lot by working in contact with experts. It helps you grow both professionally and personally, by making more connections, wider your knowledge and seeing things from different perspectives.” Lewis agrees and says that he is already looking at other Hackatons at the moment that he can join.

The Brabathon was hosted by Philips IGT and organized by Academic Business Club and Tilburg University IQONIC.
