dr. B. Ossewaarde-Lowtoo

Tilburg School of Catholic Theology
Department of Biblical Sciences and Church History

My research interests include moral, political and social philosophy, Christian humanism, and transhumanism. The common thread to all this is a philosophical/theological anthropology that includes human exceptionality, the human vocation to moral and spiritual self-transcendence, and human evil. The focus of my present research is the economic field, and hence inevitably, the political field as well. It rests on the premise that, in modern societies, the economic game is driven by the desire for glory, victory, immortal fame, or ambition, which, more often than not, conflates with the desire for domination. While that desire was checked in previous moral orders, it has become a virtue in contemporary cultural constellations. The civilizational goal of superiority has been causing much havoc, but even more fundamentally, it alienates individuals from themselves, each other, and from life itself. The aim of the present research is, therefore, to explore the possibilities of subverting the lust for domination.
