In my NWO project I focus on the encounters between Hindus and Buddhists in the constructing of a sacred geography and the actual use of sacred sites in Sri Lanka. This sacred geography consists of circa 50 sites and it is based on a mythical tale within one of the classic Hindu epics, the Ramayana. Parts of the story (especially concerning king Ravana) can be shared by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Recently, places mentioned in the Ramayana as allegedly located in Lanka (often equated with present-day Sri Lanka) are being ?rediscovered? and marked in the landscape. This development is supported by the Sinhalese-Buddhist government of Sri Lanka to attract Hindu-tourists from India by offering so called Ramayana-tours.

In my project I investigate in what ways place-making and the invention of shared traditions (narratives/rituals) concerning the Ramayana-geography, and the actual visiting and performances at three Ramayana-sites in Sri Lanka have shaped the encounters between Hindus and Buddhists.
