prof. Phillip Paiement

Bio

My name is Phillip Paiement and I am the Professor of Law & Governance in the Anthropocene at Tilburg Law School. I received my PhD from Tilburg Law School in October 2015. Prior to that I completed an LLM in International Human Rights at Criminal Justice at Utrecht University and an MSt in Socio-Legal Research at Oxford University.

Expertise

Since September 2022 I am the Principal Investigator in the ERC Starting Grant 2021 funded project 'TransLitigate: The Agency of Transnational Strategic Litigators in Global Environmental Governance'. The project combines doctrinal and qualitative socio-legal methods to study the transnational collaborative networks of strategic litigators work on climate change, pollution from the extractive industries, biodiversity conservation, and land conflicts. The project is situated within the broader Constitutionalizing in the Anthropocene research community at Tilburg Law School.

Previous to TransLitigate, my research focused on the role of social and environmental auditors and standard setting bodies in global sustainability governance. 

Teaching

I have taught courses in the fields of jurisprudence, comparative law and legal theory in the LLB Rechtsgeleerdheid, LLB Global Law, (former) LLM Research Master in Law, and BA Liberal Arts programmes at Tilburg University. In 2018, I was named the 'Most Inspiring Lecturer' by the student body at Tilburg Law School.
