After a cancer diagnosis, oncologists are obliged to inform patients about the chances of a favorable effect and the risks of adverse effects of treatment options. Decision aids have been developed to support this difficult process, but, unfortunately, these tend to be generic and lack personalized explanations, making it hard to relate outcomes to individual patients.

In this PhD project, we are trying to tackle these issues by analyzing the data of millions of Dutch cancer patients in order to determine the pros and cons of different treatment options for individual patients. Based on these analyses, we investigate how to communicate such individualized risk probabilities to patients with the aim of facilitating shared decision making between patient and doctor.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Communication and Cognition (TSHD), the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology (TSB), and The Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization (IKNL), and is affiliated with the Data Science Center Tilburg (DSC/t).
