That trust often depends on the fair and equitable functioning of the legislation, as perceived by citizens and whether it has been properly drafted so that interests have been measured and weighed up.

Unemployment during the Great Recession feeds left-wing populism; unauthorized immigration flows feed right-wing populism
27th June 2019In the past decade, there has been a great rise in populism in many western democracies. This has led to the emergence of radical and populist politicians. In his PhD research, Shuai Chen investigats the influence of recent unemployment during the Great Recession and the vast influx of unauthorized immigrants on the growth of populism. He shows there is a difference between the populism caused by economic factors and the populism caused by cultural factors.

Johan van Leeuwaarden appointed as TiSEM Professor of Stochastic Operations Research
11th June 2019As of June 1, 2019, Professor Johan van Leeuwaarden holds the Chair in Stochastic Operations Research (SOR). At Tilburg University, van Leeuwaarden works at the Econometrics and Operations Research department of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). SOR is concerned with the mathematical analysis of systems whose outcome is not fully predictable, and to some extent determined by randomness.

Bart Dierynck appointed as TiSEM Professor of Management Accounting
11th June 2019Tilburg University has appointed dr. Bart Dierynck as Professor of Management Accounting at the Department of Accountancy in the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM), effective June 1, 2019. Management accounting is concerned with the provision of information within firms to develop and implement strategies.

Tilburg University Twitter dashboard continuously measures political mood in EU
21st May 2019Marketing Analytics students at Tilburg University have designed a Twitter dashboard that measures data on the European elections and visualizes them in real time. It shows, for example, that LGBT rights is a trending topic in Poland, while migration is commanding a great deal of attention in Italy and Bulgaria. After the elections, the students can use the data for graduation projects.

Discussion Paper TILEC: Gun control and homicides in the USA
12th January 2019Does gun ownership lead to increased crime? This question is hotly debated, especially in the United States. Proponents of gun control point to gun-related violence, while proponents of the right to bear arms argue that gun ownership has a deterrent effect. David Schindler and Christoph Koenig found that purchase delays also had 3% lower homicide rates.

13th December 2018In a new Routledge publication, Anne Rutkowski (TiSEM) and Carol Sanders (Association of Information Systems) take an in-depth view at IT's under-studied dark side and its dire consequences for individuals, organizations, and society. With theoretical underpinnings from the fields of cognitive psychology, management, and information systems, and supported by case studies, the idea of brain overload is defined and explored.

High score TiSEM in the Shanghai subject ranking 2018
19th July 2018The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as Shanghai Rankings, focuses on the number of highly cited publications, Nobel prizes, and the number of articles published in the influential academic journals of Nature and Science. This general World Top 500 is published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
