The CentER Revolution: How Tilburg Rose from its Ashes
It’s the year 1988. The Center for Economic Research (CentER) in Tilburg saw the light of day. A light that was expected to eventually shine across the entire Tilburg School of Economics and Management (formerly FEW, now TiSEM). The spotlight has done its job. The School evolved into a bright lighthouse, even shining far beyond the borders in what was then an internationally gloomy Dutch economic landscape. This is the story of the CentER revolution and its driving force and unparalleled game-changer, Professor Arie Kapteyn, who had joined the Tilburg ranks in 1982.

From relief fund for unemployed academics to TIAS School for Business and Society
In the fall of 1983, the Relief Fund for Academic Research by Unemployed Academics (Steunfonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Werkloze Academici) was established at what was then called the Tilburg Catholic Academy. Professors Harry Peeters and Hans Adriaansens from the Psychology Department had come up with the idea because of the high unemployment rates among graduate students in the 1970s and 1980s.

1963 and the genesis of the Schools of Law and Social Sciences
Preparations to establish a Law School in Tilburg, as part of the then Roman Catholic School of Economics (Katholieke Economische Hogeschool) started as early as in 1959. Within a few years, the School of Economics moved to a brand-new campus (1962) and its name was changed because of the establishment of the Schools of Social Sciences and of Law in 1963.

Madzy Rood-De Boer, the first female professor in Tilburg
The late Madzy Rood-De Boer (1923-2009), a lawyer, was the first female professor in Tilburg: in 1971, she was appointed at the Law School of what was then called the Tilburg Catholic Academy (Katholieke Hogeschool Tilburg) and later as professor by special appointment.

University Council turns fifty
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the University Council (or College Council as it was originally called) of Tilburg University. Before staff and students were allowed to discuss and co-decide the direction the university would take, all power lay with the Curatorium (board of governors) and the Senate. At its July 2021 meeting, the University Council briefly commemorated this milestone.

Fons Pennartz’ inspiring conversations with Cobbenhagen
There are few alumni left who were taught by with Martinus Cobbenhagen, the founding father of Tilburg University. The 94-year-old Alphons Pennartz (nicknamed Fons) is one of them. A nostalgic double portrait with his soon-to-retire son Peter, also an alumnus of Tilburg University in Economics.

First Mechanical Brain in Tilburg
On the second floor of the Goossens Building there is a kind of museum, a small room with all kinds of equipment. What this mini museum unfortunately lacks is the very first computer on campus, an IBM 1620. In 1962 the purchase of this was big news.
